This has been covered before by peolple with a lot more experience than me, but if you can't find it. OS dosen't like big partitions on the drive say 80gb, try formating the parttiton to Fat32, And of cause are you using the disk utility at the top of the page after selelcting a language on the OS X install DVD, to errase the partition and hence format it to HFS+?

Else you can use VMware to install on a vurtual drive and then dd the image to your id=af or type=0afh partition. Some of the guides cover this.

the hdd is blank basically, and it is 160gb's

it doesnt show up in disk utility OR when im going to install (when i have to choose the drive to install to)

i can get into disk utility and stuff using the 10.4.3 install dvd though

so should i format the drive and for example have a 120gb partition and a 40gb partition?

Try creating the partition with Knoppix and gtparted, and format to fat32.

You then have to use OS x's disk utility to erase the partition, to lable and format to HFS+.

Else use VMware. Once you have an image of a HFS+ format on the drive it gets easier for some reason.
