Is there anything similar to this thread at avsforum?

Recommended HTPC builds

My searches have been unsuccessful.

Something like a bare bones $300 build, a $500-600 mid range build, and a $1000 or higher build. Or maybe a netbook, notebook, and desktop replacement for laptops. I'm personally thinking about building a quad core system in the $500-$700 range.

nothing quite as complete as that thread, no.

I mean, really there are only 2-3 components that truly make or break a hackintosh and are crucial to get right, the rest are not specific to OSX and can vary wildly without issue.

for a desktop, the only real OSX specific choices to make are video card & motherboard (and possibly PCI-based ethernet or audio if the onboard on the mobo you pick has issues)

Many people around here would recommend a Gigabyte motherboard. for a socket 775 and Core 2 based system the P35, P45 & G41M based boards are very popular, come with functional audio & networking that works for the most part. some people have bonjour-related issues dealing with real-mac networks they are unable to fix but if you truly need flawless support $20 gets you a fully supported gigabit PCI NIC

As for a graphics card, for the least issues & hassle setup you'll want a Dual DVI-based modern video card, the Nvidia 9000 & 200 series are popular, well supported and for the most part share the same install procedures & drivers. If you go ATI you need to be a little bit more specific, gotta check for compatibility for the specific model, not just the series its in. (note: I have no ATI-based hackintosh experience myself, I currently run a nvidia 9800GT & Gigabyte EP45-DS3R)

Oh... you need a SATA hard drive & DVD drive too, OSX does not play nice with IDE

That's just as good. Thanks! Somebody should make that a sticky or something similar for the forum.
