Hi everyone

I have installed vanilla SL on a G33M-DS2R with a q6600 cpu and so far it is working perfectly. The only issue I have is the GPU (8800gt) — it seems not to throttle. Fan noise is significantly higher then with Windows, and seems to stay constant whether I use GPU-demanding tasks or not. Unfortunately, I cannot get any temp readouts so I can't confirm whether the card is overheating. I use automatic EFI string injection provided by latest Chameleon.

So basically my question: can someone confirm that this method results in automatic fan control (or its absence) and provide some hints on how I can solve this problem?

I have a 8800GT, too (EVGA Superclocked) and my fan is on auto (very quiet) on OSX.

I'd like to make the fan spin faster because the 8800GT is a very hot card.

On Windows I use EVGA Precision to keep the Fan at 90% and the temps are 49°C on idle and about 70°C on heavy load.

Cheers!

ive had a KP cause of this, while gaming cod4 on mac,the fan do not increase at all...is possible that no one knows...how osx work with gpu fans?

Apple controls the Power Stack for nVidia card under OS X, it's true no one outside Apple/nVidia knows.

I can tell you that the BIOS for the GFX card is read by OS X, and it does try to control the Heat/Power however, the more your card differs from Apples cards, you may get some odd reaction.

You maybe able to control the fan, or edit your Video Bios to better conform to the Power Stack.

I outline, some GeForce 8 fan stuff, in that thread.

thanks for the info, in fact i have an ATI (hd4890) i had to use patched kext and pkg from netkas to make it work, i really dunno where i should looking for, maybe i should downgrade to 4870, or wait for new card by apple.

i use chamaleon and pc efi1.5, the system is overclocked by default, dunno if those info matter.

in the worse case i ll simply dont play games on OSX, and i should be safe...i hope so
