I have a clean install of OS X on a Pentium 4. It is the only operating system installed.

With Vista Beta out, I want to try to set up a dual-boot solution. I also have a 2nd drive connected to the system that is currently being unused, so it could be used for the Vista Beta.

How do I set this up?

wut i normally do is i set 3 partitions.. 1st for osx dvd image.. 2nd for osx and 3rd windows itself...

i'll install windows 1st in intention to get osx to recognize the other OS partition...

as when u install osx on 1st reboot u'll get the waiting for osx boot menu sort of...

the purpose to hav the dvd install disc on 1st partition is for ur rescue purpose in case of any miss hack's...

thats wut i do...

hoyanf :D

Just use Boot Camp but install with the Vista disk rather than the XP one. While in the installer delete the 200 MB EFI partition (it's usually first). On the first restart of Vista hold option and boot from the Install DVD. Do the Startup Repair on the DVD for your Vista installation and then reboot into Vista.

He doesn't want partitions though, he said he has two drives.

He also said it's a Pentium 4. He can't run Boot Camp, as Boot Camp only works with real Macs.

Check your BIOS to see if you can set the boot device priority. Not just as simple as HD>CDROM>Floppy, but rather one HD over another. Then you could use your BIOS as the switch between drives, and essentially OS's.

Otherwise, you'll need a single drive with a boot-loader of some sort.

While it is possible to create a dual booting system without it, the easiest way by far still requires you to be able to have mac osx on the primary device of your IDE chain, and yet select your second hard drive to be the first boot device in your bios. Without being able to do this, the install of vista should still work if you install it to the second drive, but it's quite complicated and the instructions you'll find if you do a google search, were written using an earlier version of the vista beta builds, and the instructions have changed. I'll need to know if you can select the boot order of your hard drives in bios before I can help you further.

I'm trying to do the same thing as him. I have 10.4.5 on my first disk and have just bought a 250GB HDD set as slave (dual). I'm trying to isnstall Vista on one and OS X on the other but if I want to boot into windows I have to manually unplugg my os x hd. WIndows cannot detect the os x hd because I had to disconnect it when I boot.

I can't access my BIOS. I don't know what key to press. I've already tried F1-F12. I have a Sony Vaio PCV-MXS20.

According to this page right here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm the key to access the bios on a VAIO appears to be either F2 or F3. Trying pressing the Esc key if it flashes a splash screen for your computer manufacturer to see it boot. Try hitting those two keys twice a second from the instant you turn on the power, till you see that windows has started (it won't start windows if you succeed.) Oh, and try pressing the pause/break key if things are scrolling by too fast.
