OsxWade
********Thanks Everyone I decided to go with a ASUS 4870 Dark Knight 1gb works great See below********* I'm in a weird place with my hack, I have purchased everything except the GPU, getting very confused with all the non conclusive information on some of the forum posts. I do not want to purchase something that is not compatible or partly functional. What I know: That there have been some recent announcements that Apple will be supporting the 4850 and 4870 series graphics cards. (Better Drivers are on the WAY! ) NetKas has also made some recent updates to allow better support for 48xx graphics cards in the latest release of EFI V10.4.1 . 48xx cards with Reference Design seem to work the best with Dual DVI for Dual monitor support that has access to full monitor resolutions. ------------------------- What I ask the forum is lead me and others in the path of enlightenment with our current and future builds using the Radeon 48xx series cards. My main purpose for this card is for Snow Leopard or just Leopard support (I will be working in Photoshop and iMovie) Secondary is to play games on in WIN7 (dual boot) Im looking at the following cards for my build, - ASUS EAH4870 DK/HTDI/1GD5 Radeon HD 4870 Dark Knight 1GB - HIS H487FN1GP Radeon HD 4870 1GB - XFX HD-487A-ZWFC Radeon HD 4870 1GB or - POWERCOLOR AX4890 1GBD5 Radeon HD 4890 1GB Im trying to stay in the 150 - 200 dollar range and it simply has to have dual monitor capability and functional sleep. Do you have any of these cards, if so please post your experiences with any of them or if you have a suggestion on a suitable card for my use. Thanks in advance, Wade Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/192609-choosing-the-right-radeon-4870-4890-with-sleep-and-dual-monitor-support/ Share on other sites
OsxWade
I just wanted to let everyone know that if the radeon card that your looking at has two dvi outputs and is a 4870 it should have pretty good support under snowleopard. The card that I decided on was the ASUS EAH4870 1gb Dark Knight , I went with this card because there have been several people on the forums that have this card working with no problems using both DVI outputs. Several People on the simple guide to A Simple Guide to the 4830/4850/4870/4870x2/4890, Working QE/CI, Resolution Change, etc. and the Netkas EFI page have ASUS branded 4870s and 4890s fully functional. The Dark Knight 4870 was also the best deal at the time, came out to 139.99 after the rebate from non other than NewEgg. I can not understand the price difference between the MAC versions of the 4870 and PC versions besides the MAC tax that has been applied? OsxWade
its - mini-dp and inability to be crossfired Ahh yes it would make sense that I would pay more and receive less when purchasing official apple approved hardware. netkas - thanks for all your help, I find your website and your contribution to the scene awesome. Im sure once I get my new card and finally put everything together I will owe much of the video success to the 10.4.1 update and your site and various tutorials on insanlymac.com. Thanks again and keep up the good work. OsxWade
What board are you using with your 4870? I actually purchased a ASUS 4870 Dark Knight, Running it on a GigaByte p55-UDR3 on LEO 10.5.8 Everything is working pretty good I only have issues with the DEEP sleep. Regular sleep with the monitors work just fine, using Two DVI cables, I had 1 DVI and 1 DVI>VGA and only the DVI monitor would turn off while in partial sleep mode.
