So here's the story so far:

I'm running osx86 on my Advent 411c (MSI Wind clone). Currently got it all the way up to 10.5.8. All running just fine. I have a 500gb hard drive with a single os x partition. Currently taking up approx 220gb

I have a bootable SuperDuper copy on an external 320gb HDD, I can F11 at start-up and run from the external drive without any problems.

Yesterday I decided I want to dual boot with Ubuntu netbook edition Jaunty Jackelope.

So I d/loaded it and mad a bootable USB thumb drive. All ok.

I booted into Ubuntu and used gparted to carry out a non-destructive partition as follows:

1. Mac, approx 340gb (kept my osx install here)

2. Linux, approx 45gb NTFS (for Ubuntu to install to)

3. Linux swap, approx 2.5gb NTFS (for the Linux swap files)

4. Windows 7, approx 45gb NTFS (I might decide to install Windows 7 here at a later date)

Re-booted into os x, no problems and os x could see the new logical drives.

Next I re-booted into the Ubuntu USB thumb drive and chose to install Linux under manual configuration. I installed Ubuntu to drive 2 above and selected drive 3 for the swap file. All installed fine.

Now when I start up the netbook I get an option to boot into Ubuntu, Ubuntu (Recovery?) and a third Ubuntu option but I don't recall exactly what it says. Anyhow this is what I sort of expected because installing Ubuntu messes up the os x bootloader.

Whilst I understand the idea of bootloaders the technicalities and processes are currently beyond me :)

So - my simple question is: What do I now need to do so that I can choose to boot into either os x OR Ubuntu? Preferably without having to nuke the drive and start over.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Das Human & wmarsh.

I've finally got OSX86 and Ubuntu booting via grub using this guide:

http://insanelymac.blogspot.com/2008/08/du...86-windows.html

It's not particularly elegant - it boots into grub first and if I then choose to boot OSX Darwin takes over. But the fact is it works.

I think the key to this guide working for me was the order that the partitions are created and formatted (I used the Ubuntu Live CD rather than Acronis though) and the fact it clearly stated that the OSX partition should be MBR. I had been formatting it as GUID!

Any how - thanks for the help & I got there in the end.

If anyone wants any help replicating how I did it them please ask.
