tehninja
So I'm completely new to InsanelyMac. I've been a mac user around 6-7 years now, but before that I used to build my own PC's, so I'm not green to the experience. What I want to do tho is build a robust Quad Core machine with some DDR3 ram, and a bangin graphics card / sound card. The problem I'm hitting, is that I'm not sure where to start with this. I'm looking to spend around $1200-$1500 on this project. How can I figure out if a Motherboard is compatible? Are there certain things I should be looking for/at? In terms of graphics cards, am I looking for Mac Equivelants, or are there better performing cards that will work on my upcoming machine. The other stuff I'm pretty sure I can figure out on my own, but the MB and the GFX are stumping me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Dalton63841
Google "osx86 HCL" This will give you the hardware compatibility lists for hackintosh. Scottapotamas
Most NVidia Cards work well... Thats the 8000, 9000 and GTX 200 series... Almost any of those will work... I have a 9800GTX 512, and runs perfectly, however i see no difference between that and my old 8600GT in my work... People have GTX 2?? working properly, and such and these are highend mac pro and above... Motherboards and CPU, CPU is best being Intel, more compatible and runs the apple kernel properly... therefore less patching etc... Mobo is a tricky one... Most Gigabyte ones work, including the i7 ones. i5 and i9 have been released and these are the best ones to go for, however they do not operate OSX properly as they are new and need people to work on their drivers etc... Find one you like and ask around... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/189427-hackintosh-pro/#findComment-1283908 Share on other sites
tehninja
Thanks for all the great info. I'm a little curious tho. I plan to be doing a LOT of 3d animation, video, mograph, and visual fx. Should I be going for the Core2 Xeon Processors, or the i5, i7, or i9? Scottapotamas
I dont know... I have an overclocked Dual Core processor to 3GHz, and it runs maya 2010, Autodesk suite products (inventor and 3ds max), logic 9 etc really well... I dont think it would matter which processor... I guess its cost and Clock speed that you would need... The P55 boards which take i5 processors can also take i7, and im not sure about i9... However hardly anyone has the i5 and i9 boards working as they need some new drivers... If you need the computer now, either a i7 or dual/quad rig, or wait a few months for i5/i7 boards to become mainstream... So in regards to the i* chips, is it safe to assume that the i5 is base, the i7 is more powerful, and the i9 is the most powerful? Are these chips newer than the Core2 Xeons?
