I am not sure about native IDE (with the wide cable), as I have a sata drive (both my HD and my dvd drive). I do know that I had to do complete re-install of windows because my Kalyway 10.5.2 disk would only read when I shut off AHCI mode and had it set to IDE mode. The idea of changing bios setting in order to switch was just too much so I set it for IDE then re-installed windows, then I installed Kalyway 10.5.2.

My suggestion would be try it for yourself and find out. I have read that some people cant the dvd to boot unless they have ACHI but for me it was just the opposite. I HAD to be in IDE (granted on a sata drive) in order to boot and run the install.

One thing I have learned is that you have to do what works for you and your specific hardware combination.

I picked Kalyway 10.5.2 because it was mostly compatible with me. I already tried, and I had no luck. It went so bad I didn't even get a error message when going into the installer.

All it did was show either a /, |, or - then froze like that. No messages, not even the part where I enter -v.

Help?

Double check all of your bios setting. Kalyway is VERY picky. Make sure you Latency Timer is set to 64 instead of 32. Not sure why this matters, but it does.

If that doesn't work for you post all of your specs (mobo, hd, ram, pc or laptop) anything that can helpful. I am sure someone here knows how to get you going. :(

Do I have to set anything else in my BIOS other than the Latency Timer? If you need it, my specs:

Intel D915GSN Motherboard (915G Chipset)

Lite-On iHAP422 IDE DVD Drive

Western Digital 320GB SATA HDD Drive

Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz

NVIDIA GeForce 7200GT PCI-E 256MB Graphics Card

Unfortunately, what's required for one computer is what makes something not work for another computer. Thus, unless you can find somebody running the exact same hardware you've got, you should count on experimenting when it comes to things like BIOS settings, choosing a distribution, etc. That's just the way it is in the OSx86 world.

Getting back to the original question, both PATA and SATA DVD drives can be made to work, at least as a general rule. There are exceptions, of course. FWIW, I've installed both iPC and Leo4All v2 on an eMachines T3646 with both SATA and PATA hard disks and a PATA DVD drive. I didn't have much luck with Kalyway on that system, but I don't believe the problem was the DVD drive -- I seem to recall that it hung partway through the installation. I also experimented briefly on another system that has a PATA DVD drive, but I don't recall precisely what worked with it. I'm pretty sure that I tried Leo4All (v2 or v3) and Kalyway on it, and at least one of these installed.

Layman's terms please?

Layman = You will need to experiment and do what works for you.

Well I checked the Desktop HCL for 10.5.2, and found my sister's computer was there - and my PC is better than hers in specs - so I'm coming up with a way to convince her to trade PC's with me :(
