amantonas
Hi, I have a dell dimension e510 (P4 SSE3 processor) with Ideneb 10.5.6 installed. I installed everything, and it all works, but I get the kernel panic whenever I try to mount a dmg. So I guess the first step would be to update the kernel? I installed the Sleep 9.2.0 kernel. If I want to update, what should I download? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/183201-some-questions-about-kernels/ Share on other sites
Beerkex'd
Hi, I have a dell dimension e510 (P4 SSE3 processor) with Ideneb 10.5.6 installed. I installed everything, and it all works, but I get the kernel panic whenever I try to mount a dmg. So I guess the first step would be to update the kernel? I installed the Sleep 9.2.0 kernel. If I want to update, what should I download? Sigh. Read the first sticky post in this forum. That said, the real fix for this is using a kernel that matches the version of Leopard that you are running. So if you're on 10.5.8 you should be using a 9.8.0 kernel. Remember you cannot run the original "vanilla" Apple kernel on a P4. The last official release of the Voodoo Kernel is 9.5.0 and can be downloaded from the xnu-dev google code site. Don't forget to grab the .pdf manual as well. There are unofficial versions of 9.6.0 - 9.8.0 available, just search. I recommend the Qoopz releases (see my signature). If you switch kernels manually remember to set the correct permissions on it before rebooting, like this: sudo chmod 644 /mach_kernel sudo chown root:wheel /mach_kernel Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/183201-some-questions-about-kernels/#findComment-1245193 Share on other sites
amantonas
Awesome. Thank you so much. And I come from many forums where the admins don't use stickies, so I'll try to back into that. amantonas
Wait, so I would use Voodoo, and not some other kernel? Whenever I install using voodoo, I get a kernel panic at startup. vilpostus
I could recommend AnV XNU kernel together with its System and IPFirewall kexts. Works for me. amantonas
So it doesn't matter that voodoo didnt work when I first installed, and I should just update from sleep to voodoo? Beerkex'd
You can install and use as many different kernels as you like. Type the kernel name at boot to load the kernel you want.
