Apropos this thread - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=181405

It seems as if getting a working 4850 on 10.6 is a bit more involved that Netkas' original suggestion to edit a couple of .kexts. It took a while but there appears 3 ways to get a 4850 working on Snow Leopard. If one option doesn't work for you, try the other. For single use you will still need a DVI->VGA adapter in the extra slot, and I have yet to test dual DVI. I haven't tested this for x64.

1. Use a gfx-string with your device's appropriate pciroot location, along with ATIRNDRV.kext and ATINDRV.kext into S/L/E. you can get those two .kext from the 10.5.8 combo install. if you get a shaky/jumpy screen, try the 2nd option

2. Following option 1, use a gfx-string, the two .kexts, but also install evoenabler.kext into S/L/E.

3. Install ATIRNDRV.kext, ATINDRV.kext and evoenabler.kext into S/L/E. You will also need to edit ATI4800Controller.kext to include the 4850's device ID number (0×94421002). In lieu of editing the .kext you can instead install netkas' 48x0 package, which also includes the ID numbers for the entire 48x0 family.

Hope this helps some of you!

I can also report succes.

I have it in my DSDT (at least I think, I wrote Motmot and assigned it the correct PCI slot) and inserted the Dev-ID into the 4800 kext, but that didn't help the weird distorted graphics. So I installed ATINDRV and ATIRNDRV - then it works flawless, but only in 32bit. Judging from the temp of my GPU, I take it PowerPlay works now too without jumpy screen.

Pretty good.

Sleep also works, having SleepEnabler and OpenHaltRestart installed (besides the two ATI kexts I left the S/L/E untouched otherwise)
