Right now this is placeholder for my experience trying to get xps 420 booted with SL. If anyone here has already done it, please contact me so we can create a guide!

Current Specs

XPS 420

Q6600 Quad Core OCed to 3.0

8gb DDR2 800 Ram

1TB HDD (2 500 GB)

Nvidia 8800 GT

Running in ATA (not raid)

SigmaTel STAC9227

Network Intel 82566MM

Alrighty so I've been able to get my first install done. Not a fully retail install but getting there. I used the SnowOSX distro. Must turn RAID ON in bios.

Hey,

I've got an xps420 too and wanted to install Snow Leopard.

I was looking at downloading SnowOSX_Universal_10.6(432)GM-v3.5.iso.

Anything I should know after downloading for the install? does everything work? what do you mean by "not a fully retail install but getting there"? anything missing?

Thanks!

I've done a retail install on a USB Drive with a DSDT mod to stop the bios from resetting. I found a x32/64 LAN kext for the Intel onboard LAN, but Audio has not worked yet. Even in -x32 I can't get Audio to take.

I also can't get it to recognize my SATA drives in Raid or Auto via bios. So for now I'm limited to USB only.

Any idea on what kexts to use for SATA or sound?

I actually have 2 Raptor drives in a Raid Setup and a 1 Terabyte drive, but I didn't set "Raid on" for 10.5.6 - 8. I used a 10.5.6 pack of kexts I picked up that got my hard drives working.

AppleAHCIPort.kext

AppleSMBIOS.kext

dsmos.kext

IOAHCIFamily.kext

JMicronATA.kext *Not sure if I needed it.

Just installed these by default and haven't had any issues. I think some install with Raid on, but I hadn't had much luck with that.

Later used a IONetworkingFamily.kext to fix time machine.

STAC9227.v2 got me down the road for audio using a AppleHDA.kext and HDAEnabler.kext

The sigmatel text dumps would always reset on reboot.

I got SL to install using a USB Drive but it doesn't see my DVD Roms or my Hard Drives.

Used a 8800GTX via EFI String from UInstaller

And a 32/64 bit Intel82566MM.kext for LAN

Sound doesn't look possible yet.

I remember somewhere someone had made ICHx kexts for Snow Leopard, maybe that's what's missing? I'm reluctant to try again, can't afford to redo my system atm.

I'll post a update for me. I had much success with a XPS 410, so I took that Image over to my 420. I used that SL Universal 3.5 Distro for installing. Had to make a tweak to the DSDT to stop the CMOS resetting the bios.

Also had to use Chameleon RC3 with a modified boot1h to stop the boot1: error occurring. You can google that problem by searching "XPS 410 boot1: error". Its a pretty simple fix, but I had to find someone that posted the compiled boot1h since manually doing it confused me.

It appears the only way I can reliably boot off a HDD is to be running it in SATA 1. My other SATA ports are acting slowly. My current 10.5.8 Software Raided Raptors respond very slowly and I figure its something to do with the AppleAHCIPort.kext.

I got audio working using VoodooHDA. Seems like the XPS 410 has more traffic / comments on it. They are running ICH8 vs. the 420 running ICH9. If I could figure out why the SATA performance is slow I'd be happy.

Just stumbled on this thread and thought I would attach the kext file that I used on my XPS 420. I'm not having luck with onboard LAN/Audio, My DVD drive works as a reader, but it gives errors trying to write discs. Built in ATI Radeon 2400 card only works in 1024x768 mode. Everything else seems to be working fine though. I haven't had any other problems. I bypassed most of my problems with a Sound Blaster Live and a USB wifi adapter I bought at Wal-Mart for $20. I would really like to get the 2400 card working but I haven't had no luck. I'm waiting for a snow leopard release to fix it, I've tried all the known methods for Leopard and they just don't work.

Here is the kext file to get the disk drives to be recognized, unzip and put .kext file in /Extra/Extensions

Good Luck ppl! Any advice for my issues is greatly appreciated also!!

I've finally got Snow Leopard working with some help from xenophex. Once I figure out how to keep it working after some updates, I'll upload the guide I'm working on. But at 10.6.0 there are still a few problems with certain apps and SL. Until I get it working at 10.6.2 or .3 (Unless someone has any tips they'd like to provide me to speed things up!) I suggest you search for my previous guide to get 10.5.8 working. I think it may have been better than my SL experience so far... stay tuned for the guide!
