With DSL, your modem does that bit. You should just plug the OSX machine into the modem (Or switch), and it will do everything else from there. Unless you have some kind of creepy American DSL... :(

 

I got ADSL wich I login with a user and pass on my connection its not automatic like cable. Anyway is my network card not compatible evne tho it says it found it? Or am I lookin in the wrong place or something.

I have a similar problem. Mac sees my network card, and I was even on the internet for a while. But now the nic will not get a normal ip address anymore. Under the Network Preferences -> Network Status it says

Built in Ethernet is currently active. Built in Etethernet has self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet.
It has worked before. Any suggestions.

In System Preferences - Network, select PPPoE, a window appears where you can put your User and Pass, then with the Internet Connection app hit connect.
