nisto91
I'm seriously thinking about taking the plunge and modding a G5 case to my liking. I'm kind of new to this and I've read all the threads but I need some recommendations regarding the parts. I need to know what kind of mobo is good to use in the case. And if the case doesn't come with a cd drive already, I can use any cd drive right? I plan to do it like this, with the psu and hard drives on the bottom. How did he get the psu to work with the G5 socket? Also, how did everyone get the front usb and led working? And finally, is a $700 budget realistic? Thanks a lot, if you can't tell already I'm a pretty big noob. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179423-g5-mod-components/ Share on other sites
Thath0r
I'm also fairly new to this stuff, but I seem to be able to answer some of the questions of yours... - MoBo: Take what you need, or what you think you need. ATX or mATX most likely. - CD Drive: Yes, AFAIK. -PSU and Socket: I'm not sure... Either he ripped it out and modified it so, that if fits in there or it fit perfectly on its own - what I doubt btw. - Front panel: Yes, it is possible. Search for teknojunkie's G5 Diagrams here on the Boards. It shows you, hot to connect it to the Mobo. - 700$... Depends on what you wanna put in there. If you'd like to have a GTX295 - forget it, dude. And it depends on many other factors, most likely how new or performant the parts are. As I already told, I'm still a nob myself, but trust me: It already helps a great deal only reading here. Good Luck and post some pics, then! nisto91
Thanks everyone @ nerdalertdk Did you just cut out a sheet of aluminum and put it on the back or was it part of the tray? Edit: This is my newegg shopping cart, I decided to go with a core 2 duo instead of a quad core processor. Also, I can't decide between the two mobo's. I think that the gigabyte one has two more usb ports. I already have the graphics card and psu. nisto91
I'll probably get this mobo tray because then I'll be set, no aluminum cutting and measuring or anything. Or I could get a wavemaster coolermaster tray like in this thread.
