Just installed leopard on a dell dimension 8300 with dual core 2.8GHz and 1GB RAM. I have a few questions.

I used a ToH RC2 dvd to install leopard and read in a couple places that you shouldn't update or it'll cause a kernel panic. Is this true? Can I update iTunes and Quicktime or will that crash my pc as well? Am I using the vanilla kernel or a modified one?

Also, when I click About This Mac, the dock, wallpaper, toolbar, any open windows disappear and the screen goes blue for a second. Then, the gui seems to restart and everything reappears, then finder opens. Long story short, no dialogue opens telling me about my pc. What is going on there?

You can use most updates, except for version updates safely. To find out the kernel you are using, open Terminal and type uname -a, the output says what kernel you are using.

I'm not sure about the other part where opening About this Mac makes finder restart, you can try using the search on the forums for a solution if there is one.

This is the kernel I'm using. Is it the default? Sorry if these are simple questions, I'm great at Windows and alright at Linux, but new to os x.
