Hi I'm thinking to try a retail version of Leopard and for now I'm using xXx 10.5.6 updated to 10.5.8.

I was wandering what are the pros. and cons. of going with retail. I heard that you can just reinstall retail without formating your partition, is it true? I have dell inspiron 1525 and for now I only used vanilla kernel so I think I can go in retail.

Well I have the power to always screw my installs and every time I had to format the partition, and I heard that with retail you can just reinstall without formating the partition. Is that true? Because if its true that would make it easier when I do something wrong and have to reinstall again.

if you can, use a retail install. It's by definition "cleaner", and if you do things in the right way you will have less surprises when doing a major update. Try different bootloader, and choose the one that allows you to boot from retail dvd (bootthing for me). Then have a look which kexts you need and put them in the right folders of your bootloader (e.g. ../extra for chamaleon). Then install from retail dvd; if you have problems with audio and/or network probably there is a driver you can install; if you have problems with video (but: choose your card carefully in advance) do some search in the forums, efi injection will probably be your best bet.

Good luck
