Poco
If you are running a vanilla system then you will need to either: -Have Disabler.kext or similar to deal with the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext OR -You can use the same method as here iPoco Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/178710-update-help/#findComment-1219860 Share on other sites
tanbk168
make sure your hardware/components support vanilla... mine was Pentium 4 and it did not support... Self upgrade/DIY and finally a C2D E6700 and then wow lah... a vanilla install using xXx on my Sata drive... another IDE drive having iATKOS_v7.... On xXx distro, the vanilla kernel is Darwin 9.5.... upgraded to 10.5.8, the kernel is 9.8.... On iATKOS_v7, the vanilla kernel is Darwin 9.7... upgraded to 10.5.8, the kernel is 9.8.... You can try to install the default settings, but leave out the kernel... don't select anything for the kernel and the stock kernel (vanilla) will be installed. If you get a welcome screen after installation, then, you have vanilla. if not, try again with other settings... Beerkex'd
make sure your hardware/components support vanilla... mine was Pentium 4 and it did not support... Vanilla support is not a requirement for a stable and updateable hackintosh. You just need to know what you're doing. P4/AMD can run retail too. They just can't run the Vanilla kernel and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, and the few kexts that depend on it. Beerkex'd
It's not possible to make a fool-proof noob guide without intimate knowledge about your hardware and your configuration. That's the reason why so many noobs get stranded here, there is no single, easy way to update an existing installation because there are so many unknowns affecting how and if it will work. You have to educate yourself or get lucky. You can search the forum for other people who have similar hardware to yours (same motherboard or at least same motherboard chipset and same family CPU) and see what they've done. Good luck. Beerkex'd
That information is not very detailed and therefore almost useless for your purposes. It has a Core 2 Duo CPU. This is good, that means it can run an unmodified Apple kernel. It has Intel GMA 4500 graphics. This is bad, if you type that into the search box up above you'll quickly find that there are no OS X drivers available for it. You'll be running in un-accelerated VESA framebuffer mode which will suck. Some apps plain won't work and you can forget about playing games on it. There are people out there working on it though: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=173338 It has Intel HD Audio. This should work - still they don't mention what model it is. A SATA hard drive - but no mention of the chipset model. Some things you absolutely need to know: What chipset it has, both North Bridge and South Bridge. What make and model HD Audio it has What make and model LAN/Wireless it has If it has a PATA drive controller, what make and model is it. You can find out all these things by looking in the Windows Device Manager. And download a small app called CPU-Z to see your motherboard details. I think you should re-install using the same DVD you were using before you tried to update and then try following one of the many update guides on the forum to get you to 10.5.8. If you don't know anything about what a 'South Bridge' is, the difference between SATA and PATA or what a kernel extension is, just visit Wikipedia and look it up. Basically whenever you bump into a word or term that you are unfamiliar with, go look it up on wikipedia or do a google search. I don't like to repeat myself but I don't think I got through to you the first time - maybe if I put it more directly - try typing Dell Studio in the search box above, that should provide you with reading material for the next few days or weeks..
