I just realized that almost every post I've made yet on this forum involves whether or not Hackintosh will run on a certain system!! Anyway, here's my latest question. I really want to buy a netbook, and when I do, the first thing I plan to do is wipe Ubuntu off and install OS X. Before anyone mentions the Dell Mini 9, I've looked at it, but I want a bigger keyboard, more hard drive space and more power.

My ideal choice so far is the Dell Mini 10v, but the info I've found on the net so far about Hackintosh on this platform is sketchy at best. Has anyone tried installing OS X on it yet, and what were your results? Is it as seamless as the Mini 9?

The specs are much the same on the 10v as they are on the 9, but I'll list them here anyway, for the exact system I'm looking at:

Processor: Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz / 533MHz FSB / 512K cache)

Memory: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM

Hard Drive: 120GB, 2.5-inch, 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

Battery: 24WHr Lithium-Ion Battery (3-cell)

Wireless Card: Wireless 802.11g (1397) Mini Card

Video Card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950

Display: 10.1-inch widescreen display (1024x600)

Integrated Webcam: Integrated 1.3-megapixel Webcam

Optical Drive: HP 1170E External DVD Writer

Operating System: Ubuntu 8.04 Netbook Edition (but I'll be replacing it!)

So ... what do you guys think? I'm fairly certain it will work, but are there any specific kexts I might need, or kinks I may run into during installation? What version of Hackintosh do you think I would be best off to use, such as iATKOS, iDeneb, etc.? Anything you can tell me about this will be great, before I run off and spend $355 on this netbook (well, $300 plus $55 for the external drive.) I'm certainly not buying it if OS X won't work on it :)

Great choice!!

I would only replace the Wireless Card: Wireless 802.11g (1397) Mini Card with the Wireless 802.11g/n (1501) card then you are good to go! The Aspire ONE setup details should work great on this...

Yeah, I suppose I could do that. I believe Dell offers it as a customization option actually. Does the 802.11g card not work with OS X or something, though? I'd prefer just to stick with that if possible, because just about everywhere I go (including my home network) is still wireless G.

Can you throw me a link to the Aspire ONE setup details? Thanks so much for your help!

Okay, I'm bumping this topic in the hopes that someone sees it and can offer advice. I think I've settled on using iATKOS v7. Has anyone else tried this, and if so, how's it working for you? Any problems? Or should I try something else?

Also, every Hackintosh-related guide I've glanced at so far about the Mini 10v involves upgrading its memory to 2GB. Is this absolutely necessary? I ask only because I managed to destroy the last two computers I've worked on, by frying their motherboards. And I've never worked on any kind of laptop before, ever.

I got the Dell Mini 10v and installed OS X on to it. Pretty simple, all in all, but I would suggest using a retail image of Leopard, using the DellEFIBootMaker to make a USB Key to install with, and using the NetbookInstaller utility that can be found in the mydellmini forums to install kexts and what not. There is some tweaking to be done with the audio and sleep, but once you do the Terminal work, the machine works great. Has about the same horsepower as a first generation Macbook. The only complaint is the sensitivity of the trackpad. I built this one to replace my wife's Powerbook G4 and she love's it. Also, much cheaper than MacBook Air. But I would recommend this as a solid machine that has a good support community.

It also uses the new Chameleon bootloader and allows the kexts and DSDT to be loaded simply.

I have a Mini 10V running a retail install with Chameloeon 2 and everything works perfect. Use the latest mini 9 guides and tools over at mydellmini and you'll be up and running in no time. I would stongly recommend the retail route rather than messing with iAtkos (WiFi is goofy for some reason with iAtkos, it works perfect with retail)

I assume retail means buying the Leopard DVD from Apple, and installing it from that? I don't know much about that method, but I'll look into it. I would prefer not to spend an extra $129 just on OS X, though. I know, I know, I'm a filthy pirate ;)

Yes, it does, and if you're going to take the step to run the OS on "other" hardware, I would really encourage you to support Apple and purchase a license, regardless of which route you use.

Is it really necessary to replace 1397 with the 1501 Wireless card? Is there any compatibility issue?
