Hello there,

I just received an old G4 from a friend. I want to install OSX 10.4, but all I have is the dvd of 10.4 and the G4 has a CD. I have a powerbook G4 that has a DVD in it and was wondering if there was a way to get 10.4 installed on the G4 desktop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!!!!

Of course there is. Through some trickery, you can set up the G4 tower as a gigantic firewire hard disk (Target Disk Mode) and try it that way.

If that doesn't work, make a disk image and then clone it onto an empty drive (They are super cheap if the desktop doesn't have a second drive...if so, then use it). Then boot from there and enjoy.

this will answer your question...

Hey guys,

Thanks for your responses. I know how to Target Disc Mode (TDM), but I am not sure how this is going to get 10.4 installed on the desktop. I tried using my the desktop as a TDM and have 10.4 installed on it from my PowerBook, but when I try to start up all i get is the no sign (circle with line going through it). I have the disc that has 10.4 installed on it as the start up disc. I am at a loss???

As for building a disk image from my install disc, i cannot copy items from the DVD because I get a not allowed to move certain files error.

I am getting the feeling this is not possible???

Any more enlightening ideas :-)

I really appreciate all of your help!!!!

Thanks!!!!

ok, how i did this before was on the desktop, make it the TDM, and on the other machine with the dvd drive, boot from the cd. then from there, go through the initial install process, then when it comes time to format the drive, choose the firewire drive. then install on it and after everything is said and done, it should load up fine and continue the install process on it's own.

i have personally done this on a sawtooth G4 and an imac G3
