YAY its OSX :D

Anyway, I went with the "Test3" Patched DVD method of installation. I got the Phenix Dev ISO release and patched it, then burnt it to a DVD. As of now, ive been able to get the following working:

-Video running at 1280x1024x32

-Itunes, Safari (with flash), and almost every PowerPC application ive thrown at it

-Darwine (classic windows Solitaire)

-Mouse/USB glich that seems to happen a lot on this Laptop

-Firewire (for the ipod hookup)

-Dual boot (OSx86 and WinXP Pro)

-IP Network Printing

Things I have not been able to get working:

-Audio ;)

-Wireless (I have a Orinoco Wavelan Silver if anyone knows how to get that going)

-DVD Movie playback

-CD Burning

-Video Hardware Acceleration (Drivers and such)

If you got a 5150 post your stats and if you know how to fix the things I cant thanks in advance for help B)

BTW: Xbench 2.1 =22.32 P4 3.06GHZ w/768MB Ram

I have an Inspiron 5150, got it working at 1280x1024 too... also at 1400x1050, but only 256 colors which isn't pretty. :P

Anyway... all my USB mouse problems were solved when I used an USB hub, otherwise it won't work.

DVD playback is a general problem, but you might want to try a 3rd party DVD player like MPlayer.

I haven't been able to get wireless to run either... we're going to have to wait for drivers I'm afraid. Same goes with GeForce/ATI drivers.

CD/DVD burning has been working from start, audio aswell... but this might be because I used Deadmoo's installation. I installed the 6gb image and partitioned the rest of my 80gb as HFS+...

My Inspiron 5150 is 2,8ghz - 512MB - GeForce 5200 (64mb).

If you delete AppleRFMem file and disable USB in the bios, all of your USB stuff should work, at least it does for me.

How did you get Flash working? It says it installs, but it never does.

Run Safari through Rosetta. (right click the application, get info, and check the checkbox...)

i also have an inspiron 5150. when i started out i had audio and not much else (and the audio was kind of glitchy). by deleting applefpmemdriver.kext i got my usb working. using instructions on this forum i got osx to recognize my dell truemobile 1350 internal wireless card as an apple airport card (with full wep and everything).

what i don't have working now: dvd playback (common problem), video acceleration (common problem), and my audio (i tried to fix the glitch and jacked the whole thing up).

my specs:

inspiron 5150

p4 2.8 ghz ht

768 mb ram

64 mb nvidia geforce fx goforce 5200

60 gig hd

dell truemobile 1350 wireless

Good to hear you guys have been able to get all that stuff working

Yeah, I first installed the deadmoo image and I had audio working but pretty much no video. I then tried to work on the dual boot with windows and that really screwed things up so I eneded up erasing my drive and starting over with the method I did above. As far as Wireless goes, my orinoco card shows in System Profiler but thats it, so i have to find that guide you mentioned. Still no audio so Ill let you know if I find a fix for the native install guys.

after some futzing around with my no longer functioning audio driver, i was able to discover the drivers in a new location. i dont know if this will help any of you but its possible.

in the user folder for the root user there is a folder called "Darwin Kexts" that has a few different kext files in it. one of these was AppleAC97Audio.kext. i simply put this back into my extensions folder and my audio was working again. in fact, so far it seems to be less glitchy (which is odd because i am certain it is the same as the original kext file).

anybody else have any audio luck?

BTW i have the sigmatel audio on this (that happens to be the same as the ac97)

per somebodys request i will post instructions on how to get that kext out of the root user folder. to most this will be pretty easy but for those unfamiliar with osx it might be helpful.

first off, generally copying this file into your extensions folder will cause an error because the permissions of the folder (a kext is a folder, for those that don't know) and its contents are all messed up. using the repair disk permissions in disk utility didnt work for me so thats what led me to this. this can be done via terminal but if you want to do this the relatively easy way through the gui follow these instructions.

first off, you need to be able to log into osx as root. in order to do this, you have to enable the root user.

NOTE: THE ROOT USER IS NOT FOR NORMAL OSX USE. LOGGING IN AS ROOT WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE DOING CAN LEAD TO DISASTER.

i figure that anybody who got osx installed on their computer wont screw things up, but just in case so you guys know. now, getting back to things.....

enabling the root user is pretty easy. to do this, open up Netinfo Manager (Applications -> Utilities -> Netinfo Manager). once it is launched go to the security menu and authenticate. type in your password and hit ok. now go back to the security menu and select "Enable Root User." follow the prompts that follow (you will be prompted to make a root user password -- i highly advise that you dont forget it). and now you should have the root user enabled. now to part two....

now that you have the root user enabled, log off (not shut down or restart). you will be taken to a menu and you will notice "Other User..." is now an option to log in as. click on other user and type in root as the username and punch in whatever password you created for the root user. hit login and you will be taken to the desktop for the root user and the user folder for root should pop up for you. if it doesnt, go to your user folder (double click on your hard drive and click on "root" on the left toolbar). in this folder there should be a folder called "Darwin Kexts." open up this folder and you will find "AppleAC97Audio.kext". take this file and copy it to /System/Library/Extensions. voila! you have now copied the kext into your extensions folder and if you are lucky it should work. now log off root user and log back in as your own user. in fact, it may be a good idea to disable the root user. disabling it is the reverse of enabling.

let me know how this works for you guys.

WORKING AUDIO!!!! :)

I think I may have a different install method than jimbospoon because I couldnt find the "Darwin Kext" folder so I ended up going with the following method and it worked.

So now the questions on everyones mind HOW?!?!?!?!?!?!

1. login as root (using method posted by jimbospoon - thx btw)

2. go online and get the (darwin 8.0.1 for x86)

3. in the iso goto: System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext

4a. Once you found the kext, transfer it from your iso to your computers extensions folder (System/Library/Extensions)

4b.if already there is an AC97 file in extensions, replace it.

5. reboot

6.login as your normal user and you should have audio!

note:make sure you disable root as it can be a dangerous place

P.S. I am trying to get an ftp with the AC97 file from the darwin cd (Being that its open source I should be breaking any copywrite laws) :)

Good luck!

wow thats weird that those werent there. they were one mine (deadmoo image). but the darwin cd would have been my next guess :)

for those of you that want to do this but would rather do it in terminal you can copy the kext into /system/library/extensions folder and in terminal run:

sudo chown -r root:wheel /system/library/extensions/appleac97audio.kext

it didnt work right for me but i could have just punched it in wrong. somebody else could clear this up better.

Yeah, I tried that first but it was a no go. on startup it would tell me i installed the the ac97audio.kext wrong.

Anyway any luck on getting the DVD/CDR drive recognized so burning is possible?

Im currently working on getting my wireless up and running.

man i dont know how i got so lucky....i had burning from the get go. i burned the image for darwin in osx. i can probably burn from itunes in osx (havent tried yet). here is the info for my burner from system profiler:

as for the wireless there must be something out there. orinoco cards are the most popular for wardriving and thus i believe they have great linux support. although i guess osx only has native support for airport so it would be kind of a pain to configure it. but yours didnt come with an internal dell wireless controller?

I've got my Dell Inspiron 5150 dual booting OSX nicely now

1400x1050x16bit (vesa, not accelerated)

Wireless Networking (using modified AppleAirport2 from other posts)

Onboard Networking

Still gotta fix my USB issues (no mouse yet but touchpad works ok)

Really neat though, good work everyone!

How did you get it up to 1400x1050x16? It is reported as a mode when I type in ?video at boot and it says VESA 3.0 at boot, but I can only get it to go up to 1280x1024x16 or x32. What trick am I missing? Is there some other option besides "Graphics Mode"="1400x1050x16" that I need to pass along at boot? Do I need to remove some kexts? Do I need to change a BIOS setting on the machine? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
