I am having the weirdest problem with my 2008 Mac pro. I got it stock with the exception of upping the graphics card to the 8800GT from the apple store. It is running 10.5.7.

It first started happening when screensaver started. My screen would freeze and fuzzy blue lines would be up and down on the screen. The screen would also flicker and flash.

Then after restarting, it would not even boot fully. As soon as the apple screen appeared, the blue lines where there again and the process would freeze leading to the flickering and flashing again. After a while, a really messed up and out of color blocky screen would appear. Even when booting into choosing a start up disc (holding option, bootcamp) it is messed up. When choosing Windows XP, the same problem persists. This has me thinking its the card. But then, why is it working sometimes and not others.

I managed to log in with no problems ONCE when trying to boot from the CD many times. After watching a video (avi) for ten min, the comp crashed again as first described. Everything freezes except the mouse and you can hear the video playing but its not moving. The screen then goes to the "error. you must restart box"

The console showed some kind of NVerror or graphics channel timeout. I was also getting NVDA OpenGL channel exceptions. Those msgs were always shown before a crash.

I have searched for this prob online, only to find little. Is it my gfx card? Could it be a driver issue? I ran the hardware test (which worked even though the screen was messed up) and everything came back fine.

HELP!!!

I have already tried disconnecting everything and trying both x16 slots. Neither works. Right now, the card is back in the original location.

I have also reset the PRAM to no avail.

I had it working earlier, but again, ten min into another avi file, it crashed.

pop in your old card, and see how that runs, if it's fine, then you have a couple options.

1) return/get replacement card from the apple store. if it's defective, it's defective. if they refuse to take it back, talk to the manager. electronics stores are hell when it comes to returns.

2) you did plug the card in right? it's got that 6-pin PCI-e connector...i'm not sure what card your Mac Pro sold with, but it's worth asking. i don't think you're a fool, but even i've forgotten very basic things at times.

I'd also test the monitor out with another computer, simply because some of the problems you describe, i've had because of bad VGA/DVI cables. since the Cinema displays have those cables built in, your options are limited when it comes to fixing that.
