My school has just got rid of their rev.C eMacs, annd gave them away to anyone who asked, on one condition- the drives were wiped.

So I get mine home, and when it powers on, there is just the apple face flashing into a question mark- which I presume means there is no boot device (ie, wiped HD)

I borrowed the 10.4, 10.3, and 10.2 (genuine) install discs for emacs, after being told that depending on the age of the machine, only a certain OS would load...

10.4 didnt work, it just ejected the disc, 10.3 booted with the apple logo, then the "no entry" circle with a line through it.

However, when I put the 10.2 disc in, it boots, and shows the apple logo, and then the loading circle, then crashes depending on how I boot it up:

When I put the disc in and leave it, it loads for about 5 seconds, then the screen crashes, with lines across the screen, but when I boot up holding "c", it loads for 5 seconds and then displays kernel panic, and tells me to reboot...

Has anybody got any idea how to fix this problem? Thaks in advance

Your school used Open Firmware tricks. You'll need to take out the RAM and exchange what slot they are in. Then start up holding down command-option-p-r until you hear three additional bongs.

That should wipe Open Firmware and you can boot from the CD.

Sorry for not replying- been on holiday :)

I did what you said, and it didn't work, the same thing hapened.

However, I took it to my mates house, connected via firewire, and copied a fresh install from his Mac.

Thanks anyway though :D
