Hello all,

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook S6120 Centrino laptop running on iATKOS v7 10.5.7 and thought I'd share the steps and ask a few questions.

System Specs

First, the notebook specs. Taking them from a comparison at

and listing them here for the search index:

Fujitsu Lifebook S6120

  • Processor - Pentium-M 1400 MHz
  • Memory - PC2100 DDR SDRAM (1.25gb)
  • Northbridge - Intel 855GM / 82855GM (GMCH)
  • Southbridge - Intel ICH4-M
  • Graphics Controller - Intel 82852 / 82855 GM / GME up to 64 MB (DVMT)
  • Ethernet - Onboard Realtek RTL8139
  • Wireless - Mini PCI Atheros AR5001X+ 802.11B/G (I replaced original Intel Pro WLAN 2100) (AR5001X+ = VEN_168c&PID_0013)
  • Bluetooth - none (I did add a generic USB bluetooth)
  • Modem - Agere Systems AC'97
  • Audio - SigmaTel C-Major Audio STAC9767
  • Pointing Device - Touchpad
  • DVD/CD - Toshiba SD-R2412 8x/10x/10x/24x DVD/CDRW-Combo
  • Hard drive - TOSHIBA MK4018GAS ATA-5 40gb 4200 rpm 2mb
  • PC Card Slot - 1 x
  • USB ports - 2 x USB 2.0
  • 1394 ports - 1 Texas Instruments TSB43AB21 IEEE-1394a-2000 (PHY/Link)
  • IR port - yes

Install Options

The iATKOS v7 install disk boots up find without any command line switches, although it takes forever on the gray logo screen with the spinning wheel. From looking at the -v boot screen, I believe this is where it is dealing with PC Card controller timing out. Eventually, it does move on to the install screen. Just be patient for up to 5 minutes or so. Once past the gray screen, the keyboard and touchpad work fine for the install.

Here are the choices I during install:

  • iATKOS v7 Main System - leave default
  • Bootloader - default - Chameleon v2
  • X86 Patches
    • /Extra directory - default – checked
    • DSDT - default – checked
    • Decrypters - default – AppleDecrypt
    • SMBIOS drivers - default - NONE checked
    • Kernel - select - 9.5.0 Kernel voodoo
    • ACPI - select - APIC driver
    • Disabler - default - checked

    [*]Drivers

    • VGA - default - NONE checked
    • System
      • SATA - select - Intel SATA/IDE
      • PS/2 mouse/keyboard - select - Apple PS/2 driver
      • Laptop Battery – select

      [*]Network – Wired

      • Realtek - select - Realtek RTL8139

    [*]Post-Install Actions - default - checked

These settings installed and got the laptop to boot up. Again, there is a long delay at the beginning of the install process. I think it might have been even up to 15 minutes where you think the box is just hung. Just let it go. It will eventually complete.

After the system reboots, you will see another long delay, maybe 6 minutes this time, where the box seems to just hang for a while. I believe this is because the PC Card driver has not been addressed yet. I did not select the PC Card in the iATKOS install because I had problems with it for some reason I could not figure out, so I just let it go through as is and added another driver after the system was up and running.

Hurdles

If the first boot after install gets stuck, check by booting with -v. If it hangs after a message like:

Mac framework successfully initialized

Using xxxxxx buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers

then you probably didn't add the "APIC driver" option in during the iATKOS install. Boot up the iATKOS v7 install disk and try again (I think you can uncheck everything else and just add that driver to the existing installation.)

If the first boot gets past the Mac framework bit but then gets stuck somewhere down the road "waiting for the root device" then you probably didn't add the Southbridge chipset driver (System - SATA - Intel SATA/IDE). Boot up the iATKOS v7 install disk and try again.

If you got past the two possible hangs I saw, then you'll be able to go into the account configuration and start using the OS. Onboard ethernet came right up without intervention. Video is basic, without acceleration or Quartz, but resolution full and quite usable.

Additional Steps

The last things I added once the box was up and running were:

  • AppleAC97Audio.kext - to get sound. Don't recall where I got the file, but dropped it into extensions and it worked just fine (The Voodoo HDA driver that loaded by default with the iATKOS v7 installation didn't work for me. I left it in the install because I don't know if it contributes to getting the sound working, but I definitely had to add the AC97 kext separately.)
  • AR5001X.tar.gz - got my Atheros wireless working with AirPort (remember, I replaced the Intel wireless that came with this Fujitsu. The iwi2100 beta drivers kept causing kernel panics and the Atheros bumped me up to 54mb. I pulled this Atheros minipci card from a Sony PCG-V505DC2P laptop.) Got the driver from http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=117890
  • IOPCMCIAFamily.kext - from Chun-Nan to get the PC Card Slot working and, more importantly to me, eliminate the long boot delay.

Usability

The system boots up reasonably quickly for its age and configuration. Everything I have tried seems to be more or less usable as it should be except for things which require a proper video driver (like Front Row?) The power management setting are a bit of a mystery for me. I don't know if I should expect them to work or not. Seems like sleep isn't working properly and the system will go into some kind of hang if it is left alone too long, even when sleep is disabled in the Energy preference pane. I'm no expert on this stuff, so right now I am at a loss. If you are actively using the box, it seems to stay up just fine.

Also, if you select "About this Mac," Finder crashes and restarts. You can run the System Profiler directly, but not "About this Mac." I've been researching this and I understand it to be an issue with AppleSMBIOS. I have tried many different SMBIOS, but they all lead me to other questions. Some do allow "About this Mac" to work, but then other issues come up.

Questions / Plea for help? :-)

I've researched all of this, but I have either not found answers or I did not understand how to approach the problem. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Netflix Instant Play – Even though Silverlight loads fine, Netflix gives me a DRM error. From what I can tell searching, this relates some how to uniquely identifying the laptop/OS through AppleSMBIOS. I have yet to find an AppleSMBIOS solution that will work with iATKOS v7, voodoo 9.50 kernel and Netflix Instant Play. Can anybody help? It would be great if "About this Mac" worked as well, but I'd settle for getting Netflix to work if it's possible.
  2. Video driver for Intel 82852 / 82855 GM – Anybody have a real video driver for this chipset? It's quite common in these older laptops and works great under Linux. The thing uses up to 64mb of RAM, so I would really love to get a real driver for it. Any chance the lack of graphics driver factors in to why Netflix won't play?
  3. General Power Management – I'm not looking for complete notebook functionality on this old laptop, but it would be great if I could start with it just not locking up when it is left alone. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the best way to set this up driver-wise. Should I add speedstep drivers? Clamshell? Any other recommendations for overall stability or features on this platform?

Summary

All I've done is write up my experiences based on about 2 weeks of loading and unloading different distributions on this old Fujitsu. I really like the laptop and it looks like osx86 would run really nicely on this box if I get just the right combination of fixes/patches/drivers loaded up. Thought I would share because I didn't find very much referencing this exact laptop in any of the forums. I put the info together based on searches for all the different bits and thought it might help the next guy or gal. I really appreciate all the effort from those of you whose work is referenced in this post. I am taking credit for nothing; simply thanking those of you who posted all the great information.

Thanks again for any additional suggestions,

Thanks for the guide. Helped me set up on my E4010. The only things different that I did were not installing PS2 and adding OHR and USB in the customisation step. For my trackpad etc I then installed PS2FixKeyboard package (lurking somewhere in this forum) as the default PS2Controller was not successful (from previous installs). I write this as my computer does not seem to have the power issues that yours have (but certainly did when I followed your guide without alterations), so maybe this is of some help. Cheers

Thanks for those tips. I'll have to give them a try!

Hope they work out. The other day I left my laptop on for 2 hours and came back to find out it was still working. Have had trouble with freezing or losing network on previous installs on my desktop as well (including Kalyway), so was pretty impressed. By the way, you haven't managed to get an improvement with the graphics per chance?

Hi,

thanks for the good tutorial. I got my Acer Travelmate 662LMi set up following your guidelines.

Here are just a few notes:

1) As you already pointed out, I also strongly disadvise choosing the PCCard driver during install. It simply keeps hanging after "Mac Framework" forever. It's pretty easy to install a suitable driver after a successful install, exactly as you described.

2) Unfortunately the current snapshot of the ip2100 drivers also hurts the kernel on my PC, so I have to work without it.

3) The audio drivers were grabbed from here (in this case, it was the first driver from macgirl) - work right out of the dmg.

4) Interestingly, my "About this Mac" works flawlessly. It displays the RAM and CPU infos correctly.

And here are some questions I have:

Does someone use graphics drivers for the GMA855?

Has someone got the iwi2100 drivers running?

Regards :)

Wow, pity that I did not found your post few days ago, anyway I also manage to install iATKOS on my old Panasonic laptop. I still have some more things still not work:

- Network card Realtek 8139: the Network Ultility seems recognized the card but I can not connect to Internet but I do not know why?

- Wireless Intel Proset 2200 ABG: is there any people could make it work? Or I have to replace that with another?

- Video card Intel 82852 / 82855 GM / GME can not work with DVD player and Front Row

- Sound card SigmaTel C can not work

Hope some people passby and give the solution.

Edit 0: I use your instruction to install AppleACAudio and it work like charm. Thanks very much!

Hallo,

my english is not gut. is here anywhere who will translate this to english - feel free :-)

PS2Fix1054 -> Neustart -> Tastatur & Touchpad funktionieren

I decided to try to post this in short english:

if keyboard and mouse do not work, install macos with usb mouse an keyboard. after installation get get PS2Fix1054 install it and reboot
