One smart thing you can do before you even install Mac OS X is to create a seperate partition for the OS. Then you can set up time machine to make snapshot backups of your system software. If you ever mess anything up, you can boot off your install disk and rewind the OS using Time Machine to a version just prior to your mis-step.
