  1. 1. Should new builders wait until Snow Leopard is out to make their system?

I'm set myself on building a hackintosh and have picked out the parts. However, I don't know if I should wait until Snow Leopard is out or not. I plan to dual boot the 64-bit versions of both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard on two separate WD 640GB HDDs. As far as motherboard goes, I'm going to go with the Gigabyte GA-EP4-UD3P mostly due to the amazing guide here.

Would it be better for me to wait until Snow Leopard is out, or will I be able to upgrade from 10.5.7 x86 to 10.6 relatively pain-free? Will the retail version offer a way to upgrade from the WWDC version so I can get the 64-bit drivers out of the way in the beginning?

On a side note, is support for the GTX 275 fully featured now and would it be less of a hassle to get a GTX 285 (I noticed there's a mac version which makes me think the Windows version might be easier to get up and running than the 275). Is nVidia set to make any large announcements with regards to pricing or new technology that would fall in the same price range?

Thank you in advance for any insight.

Well, that guides fine for both... I wrote a guide (see sig) for these EP45's and somewhere theres a list in there of all the series boards. I have tried the mentioned above board and my sig machine with snow and the mobo is compatible...

I don't know about the GTX 285... I have a 8600Gt and i am planning on getting a GTX 250 soon... Don't know if it really matters. You need to research its compatiblity first...

As for the OS's, it takes an incredible amount of work to get snow working. I got the wwdc working on my sig machine, and it works, but until all the drivers have been rewritten into 64bit mode, its not worth jumping over. There isn't much to miss... I suggest if you must get the machine now, get it, use 10.5.7 until snow has been released, then upgrade when some decent guides and kext packs are out. At the mo, its really hard to find the right ones and i had to make some of my own...

About the EP45-UD3P, try the even most amazing guide in my signature. Weaksauce did a great job with it and provides all links, bios settings. It's much easier and works perfectly.

I just warn you that you can't overclock through the roof with this board if you intend to use deep sleep (S3 in the Bios). Starting from 380-400 FSB, the board refuses to wake up and and restarts all over again until you shut off the PSU. For that reason, the EP45-UD3R is probably a smarter choice in this case.

The GTX 275 is already supported if you follow Netkas guide @ netkas.org. I'm planning to buy one myself – the MSI Twin Frozr – but I'm waiting for feedback just to be sure.

Thank you both. There do seem to be some amazing guides. That wiki especially is very well laid out. I don't plan to overclock anytime soon. Maybe a good while later but I'll keep that in mind. I'd like to go with the UD3P as I looked up the two boards and see that the UD3P has some sound features that might come in handy on the Windows side. I plan to hook it up to my surround set using digital coax.

I've checked around netkas' site and he seems to make some awesome developments, but I find it hard to understand a lot of times.

I guess what I'm wondering is there's a probability that the hardware would be more trouble than it's worth to get running on 10.6 from 10.5.7 and if I should wait to buy hardware that's easier to get up and running. I'm getting antsy waiting though XD

  • 1 month later...

Just to update, I installed 10.5.8 on the UD3P with GTX 275 and Q9550 using weaksauce12's guide with some modifications to get dual boot + the gtx275 working. Works perfect. Will upgrade to 10.6 once the drivers are up and easy to install.
