Hello,

I bought a super cheap Dell laptop for around $700 with all the functions you could possibly want. OSX 10.4.6 runs beautifully (including PPC apps) but I'm still having issues with Displays and Sound - and haven't found any definitive solution as I trawled through the forums (mainly discussed end of last year):

DISPLAY

- How do I get Quartz Extreme/ CE to work? Do I need to install/edit any kexts?

- Is there a solution to avoid the blue screen at startup and wake up without the dongle fix that I'm currently using (connecting the VGA socket pins 1 to 6, 2 to 12)?

SOUND

- No sound at all (I think the only solution is still USB)?

OSX recognises the sound up, down and mute function keys (like a mac) on my laptop!

Any help, especially with the display, would be great!

Thanks.

AUDIO:

Integrated Audio

Type: AC'97

Audio controller: SigmaTel STAC9200

Conversion: 187bit (analog-to-digital) and 18-bit (digital-to-analog)

Internal: PCI bus/AC'97

Check the Wiki for information about the blue screen and how to enable your sound. If it uses AC'97, I'm pretty sure all you have to do is add uour Device ID to a kext.

The 900GMA, up until quite recently, used to be fully supported. But I think 10.4.6 put a stop to that, check other posts about that Graphics Card.

Haven't see those Sound tips before so will try them right now, thanks. If I don't post a follow up then it didn't work!

Display: Nothing new here - looks like it is aimed for people that can't get past the nothing blue screen stage. I can - just want a permanent solution to not using a dongle to get past it and enable Core Image/ Quartz Extreme (worked under 10.3)...
