akira9000
Took delivery of a mint condition G5 case yesterday. Very happy to have got it for £40 delivered from good old eBay. Spent this morning gutting it. It used to be a dual processor 2ghz PPC but had serious issues. My question is, as it didn't come with an optical drive I have no optical drive mounting screws Surely these are standard m2 screws and some particular washer combo? Does anyone know the exact spec that I can tell my friendly neighbourhood hardware store? nerdalertdk
You can just use normal harddisk screws. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/174307-g5-optical-drive-mounts/#findComment-1197828 Share on other sites

You won't be able to use standard hard drive screws and I doubt you'll find what you need in a hardware store. The G5's optical drive actually slides into it's mounts and has two latches that hold it. The screws fasten at the bottom of the drive and have raised heads which fit the mounts. Here are some: G5 Optical Drive Screws Hope this helps! The screws are high tensile ( so black in colour but really just a cosmetic decision by Apple in this case ) Allen Capped M3 x 6mm - standard parts The spacers are just 2mm anodized black washers - standard parts As usual no black magic - just Apple hype. I even figured that G5 HDD mounting screws are Allen socket, button headed 6-32 thread, probably 6mm length but not positive, maybe 4mm - suprise, suprise standard parts. Admittedly the Apple originals are coated with a rubberised surface but what does that matter?
