Hello everybody. Recently I installed iDeneb 10.5.5 on my system (for specs see signature). Unfortunately it was lacking support for my HD 4870 so I searched the internet and found out that the drivers for this card are included in the 10.5.7 release. Hence I downloaded the iDeneb Combo Update Kit and installed it rightaway. Unfortunately the system doesn't come back up after rebooting:

error1057.th.jpg

Using the "anv" or "voodoo" kernels didn't work either. Nor does safe mode (-x -v). I can access the file system through "-s" and I made a backup of /System/Library/Extensions before updating. Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your quick reply! Adding AppleDecrypt.kext did the trick, now I can boot into safe mode successfully.

Unfortunately normal mode (-v) does not work yet:

Do I need any drivers for my HD 4870? I thought there was native support for it in 10.5.7? But anyways, I searched the web for all errors on the screen but I couldn't find anything relevant. How can I find the cause of this problem? Thanks.

I see lots of 'family specific matching fails' messages.

You are not using skge.kext by any chance, are you?

When I got rid of that, those messages disappeared (I still get a few from the nVidia drivers).

Some kind of hardware conflict I guess.

Thanks! :unsure: Actually I really was using "skge.kext" and after removing that extension most of the errors are gone now. But the system still doesn't boot in normal mode:

errorszy.th.jpg

My guess is the "display: family specific matching fails" error. Maybe the driver for my graphics card doesn't work? If that is the case, where can I get a proper driver from? Or is it the power management error?

Any help is still appreciated. :)

My guess is the "display: family specific matching fails" error.

No, don't worry about that one, it's not important. Thanks for confirming my suspicion about skge.kext - looks like you don't have to rely on it since you seem to have Realtek LAN hardware as well, so at least that's one down...

Try disabling on board hardware (LAN, Sound, other stuff) one by one and then reboot (keep booting with -v so you can see what's happening) and see if anything changes. It's easier and faster than deleting files. The drivers won't be loaded if the devices are disabled in the BIOS.

If it keeps doing the same thing at least you will know it's (probably :-) not caused by the devices you tried to disable.

Unfortunately disabling everything (USB, Sound, S-ATA, Network) in the BIOS didn't help anything at all (well except for making me get an old PS2 keyboard from the basement to re-enable my (USB-)keyboard afterwards ;)). My system.log is as follows:

I could get rid of the "unable to determine UUID for host" errors with the NetworkInterfaces.plist "patch". But the system still refuses to boot in normal mode. :)

Any other ideas?

Should the ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::getCPU_PSSData error messages disappear when the Disabler.kext is installed? I'm asking this because they still show up during booting although the kext is installed. The login window still doesn't appear but I have another message at the bottom of my system.log now:

Jul 2 19:42:45 CARL kextd[10]: writing kernel link data to /var/run/mach.sym

:(

I don't think that error message is important, it's probably complaining because AppleIntelCPUPM doesn't get loaded now.

I've seen the same message before on working systems using Disabler.kext.

I don't think it will help with your boot problem (you never know) but check that your System.kext matches your Kernel version.

If you're using a 9.7.0 kernel, make sure System.kext is also version 9.7. Check versions in System Profiler -> Extensions, or right click -> get info on the kernel extension.

The System.kext is also of version 9.7.0. From /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext/version.plist:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
	 <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
	 <plist version="1.0">
	 <dict>
		 <key>BuildVersion</key>
		 <string>1</string>
		 <key>CFBundleShortVersionString</key>
		 <string>9.7.0</string>
		 <key>CFBundleVersion</key>
		 <string>9.7.0</string>
		 <key>ProjectName</key>
		 <string>xnu</string>
		 <key>SourceVersion</key>
		 <string>12281214</string>
	 </dict>
	 </plist>

Somehow I am missing clear error statements... :thumbsdown_anim:

When I boot the system with "-v -f" (and only when the "-f" parameter is present every time!?) the highlighted message about the login window application appears (see image below). Furthermore, can you see the artifacts on the top right? I can move them with my mouse so there seems to be some sort of window manager running.

How can I configure the graphics driver to be used on Mac OS X? I think that during Safe Mode some generic drivers are loaded.

errorkoh.th.jpg

Hmm it looks like it may be the video drivers or the injector you are using that is causing this.

Try getting rid of it (and put vanilla ATI kexts back in if the drivers themselves were modified).

Then try Netkas' new universal injector (It works for both ATI and Nvidia cards)

http://netkas.org/?p=107

Well I didn't modify any video driver at all. It was a plain iDeneb 10.5.5 installation with the Combo Upgrade to 10.5.7 afterwards (from which I hoped it would support my HD 4870). So should I boot into Safe Mode and install the Netkas driver package from there?

At the moment I have the following ATI extensions installed:

# ls -1d *ATI*

ATINDRV.kext

Am I supposed to remove (some of) them? Thanks.
