Trying this here instead of in DD's since it does not appear anyone can help me given my constraints.

My build:

GA-EX58-UD3R

i7 920 2.66 Ghz

OCZ 6GB 12800 DDR3

2x WD 500GB Cav. Black SATA (plugged into Blue Sata not GA's Sata port) [1 for WIN, 1 for OSX]

Samsung 24x Sata DVD (plugged into Blue Sata not GA's)

nVidia GTX 285 1GB

Supplies:

Retail DVD

Boot 132 (generic .iso / K-B original (unmodified))

Gparted liveCD

DD's 3.6 script

I know I'm not all the way there yet. Can someone please correct my steps (trying to document for a similar build instruction as on the Wiki )

The important caveat for me is that I don't have an additional Mac system nearby, so the base assumptions for a lot of the instructions make it hard for me. This is all fresh hardware, no installs anywhere. I don't have anything that can take apart .iso files on Windows.

1. Locate and burn .iso of boot132

2. Boot DVD, format 1st sata drive as GUID HFs+ active partition

3. Run script

a. install bootloader step 2

b. install retail dvd

c. install 10.5.7 update (how? does it need to be on dvd or will usb work?)

d. install kexts

e. update boot cache

f. install dsdt

g. modify plist (more of a concern with the evenutal dual boot)

h. modify mac details (which ones are best for getting software update to behave properly?)

4. Reboot

Status:

Currently I have the MOBO ACHI settings to disabled or IDE where applicable, I've also tried things with both ACHI settings to ACHI.

Questions and issues:

re: Step 1-

I've burned two different .ISOs of boot-132. one the generic, the other the initial "noob" build from the boot132 thread.

Both .ISOs get to the Boot: prompt properly. However, neither gets past me then inserting the Retail DVD. I load the DVD and it reboots quickly afterwards. I *think* this is due to a missing kext or bootloader option I am missing.

I have tried "busratio=20" at both the initial boot prompt and the second one after hitting Enter

I have also tried -v, -v -f, -v -x -f all with or without "busratio=20"

I there something I am missing? The -v related commands all scroll past very quickly and then reboot just the same as if I don't provide anything.

Re: Step 3

Using Digital_dreamer's script: (i know this is idiotic to ask, but I want to be 100% clear)

Do I need to burn the script to cd/dvd and have it available that way? How do I load it. The instructions there just say "run script", and I think I'm missing an important step.

Final Question:

Is there a regular IRC channel for insanelymac isntead of the website version? When I click on the "redirect to IRC chat" the page just takes me to a blank page "http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?&automodule=chat"

Thanks in advance.

First suggestion. Follow D-Ds script procedure and use two harddrives. Obtain a copy of XxXOS86 or iPCOS86 (both are modified Mac OSes) and load onto one of the HDs. Once that is running in Mac, download the Mac update from Apple. Use DiskUtility on the working Mac to create a .dmg of your retail DVD to the working HD (don't have to, but it makes the install faster).

Now install your Target HD, partition and format as necessary. Then run D_Ds script (double click on the "Run-Patcher" file and the script will start. When I use his script (I have a X58-UD3R board), I first install the MacOS, then I run the updater to 10.5.6 (or 10.5.7). Back to his script (it can stay open while you are doing the updates), load the Chameleon2 bootloader, make the disk active and load the kexts.

The audio kexts in his package do not work on this board. I have yet to find a true solution for audio - best is probably a plugin USB audio dongle.

You will also need different video kexts for your video card. I have read a few posts that indicate there are working drivers for your card - seek and ye shall find!

Once Mac on your target drive is up and running to your satisfaction you can reformat the 'starter HD' and load your other OS.

As to Boot132: I have been experimenting with getting this to work - frankly it is a royal pain. Assuming you have an iso that will boot you need to type the following line of boot flags once you have done the swap from the Boot disk to the Retail DVD: rd(0,1)/mach_kernel busratio=20 -v -F rd=disk0s2

This further assumes the kernel on your boot disk is actually named mach_kernel and you have only one HD and a DVD drive equipped. Both need to be SATA.

You should next arrive at a screen that says in effect "cpu multiplier is 0 which doesn't make sense. Press y to continue or ctrl-alt-del to abort" - press y and install should proceed

When you reach the end of the install you will notice one of two things: A warning screen will pop up that says the install failed or the progress bar will stop usually with three or less minutes remaining. Move the mouse and you should get the warning screen about failed install. Do not dispair, just restart the computer.

Put in the Boot132 disk and this time F8 at the pause, then esc to change boot then type 80 when you are asked to select boot device. At the Boot: prompt enter the following line: rd(0,1)/mach_kernel busratio=20 -v -F rd=disk0s2

If the gods are smiling on you, the machine should boot into Mac and you can set your keyboard, user info and account setup.

However, if your video card is not 'liked' you may be presented with a black or distorted video screen.

Once the video works you should be able to log into here and download D_Ds install package or if you already have it (and the OS updates) on USB or other media, copy to the HD and procede.

Should the USB drive not mount when plugged in, leave it plugged in and restart the machine. Once booted back into Mac the USB drive should be mounted.

As I stated above I am presently experimenting with this procedure, I do not know for sure that it works. I have gotten to the point of successfully updating the loaded 10.5.1 from the DVD to 10.5.6. I have yet to run D_Ds script in this environment. I really want to use EFI partition booting and am presently working on that using Wolfienukes script. D_Ds script I plan to do after that.

You do not need to run the dsdt patcher on this board. I find no difference whether I run that part of the script or not.

Thanks everdone.

I'm grabbing one of the distros and will do the multi-install. I'd hoped to avoid the double install, but I think I've wasted more time trying to figure out how to get boot 132 and get things working from Windows than just doing the bootstrapping install.

Did you have everything flipped to the final AHCI settings when you did the install? I'd read some people having troubles until they flipped back to the original settings.

I've seen a couple audio kexts from threads where people got the AL888 chipset working, but also seen a few that could never get it working at all. I'll try things out cautiously.

It sounds like I should be able to get the 285 working, but still step through it slowly.

I'm trying to document this all, and once I am done will post the entire coherent process. I think I'll skip the banging head into desk x20 bit, though.

Yes, BIOS is set for AHCI. I normally use a USB box for audio at my main workstation, but I did install a VoodooHDA kext to get audio working on the x58. At present the x58 is on the 'test bench' and I am using a P45-DSL Mac at the main workstation.

I was reading earlier in the video card forum and there was a thread on getting the 285 to work, so it should be doable. D_Ds script and kexts will get everything except audio and video working correctly. Video usually works (no black screen) although not at full capacity, ie you have a fixed 1024x768 resolution and dragging a window on the screen produces some interesting results.

The nice thing about a 'backup' install is that you can experiment with the main install and if something goes wrong you can boot into the backup to fix whats broke. I have two Mac HDs in the x58. I started with a XxX'86 install. Now both HDs are vanilla 10.5.7. I added a third drive for Win7 RC1. I boot between the three drives using F12 at machine startup.

Voodoohda will get you stereo audio only on the UD3R and If I was you after getting the retail installed and working with no problems you can then erase the kalaway/iatkos/whatever drive and put retail on that also and ue the smaller as a rescue drive.

And remember when using the kalaway/iatkos/whaterver dvd you need to have busratio=20 as a kernel flag.

Well, good news/bad news.

BIOS now set to AHCI on both segments. Boot order with CDROM listed first.

I downloaded both iatkos 5i and iDeneb 1.4 (1.5.6). I've tried installing with both and get to the same intermittant issue that then goes away and gives me another intermittant issue.

1st issue:

I get the 'boot.Slist' issue when booting the Distro disks for the first time

I ended up moving the DVD drive over to the Gigabyte controller (GASata2_0 or _1), which seems to work more than not

If I somehow get past that (and reboot to reboot can change behavior, argh)

2nd issue:

I get IDeneb or iaktos installed and it reboots and immediately hits:

'boot.Plist' error.

on 2nd issue: I've tried cpus=1, busratio=20, -v and -f in various sequences and none seem to work.

device is listed as [OSX] (0,2) in bootloader.

Thoughts? Should I flip the HD's to the intel SATA2_0 or _1 or does the port number matter to the boot drives?

I have Gparted booting fine, so the DVD drive is at least working.

Also, do you think this is something a update to the latest UD3R BIOS from Tweaktown would be helpful for?

I used iAtkos5 with a PATA DVD drive and did just busratio=0 and it ran just fine

Whether the HD is BIOS 0 or 1 doesn't make any difference. Best results are to NOT use the white SATA ports - at least not to start.

If I remember the boot sequence after the distro has installed, the plist error pops up then there is a 5 or 6 second count down where you have an opportunity to enter boot flags. Press the space bar and type in: busratio=20 -v -f then tap enter. There will be a lot of text that scrolls up the screen, there will be pauses and there will be a lot of "can't find ...", just let it run and eventually you will get a black or blue screen followed by the Mac welcoming screen.

I have not attempted to load either of the two distros you have, the ones I have used is XxX and iPC.

Thank you both, trying both settings now, will report back. Really appreciate the help.

everdone, did you just hit space and get the HD selection screen or use F8?

Off to try again, at least I'm learning more and more about the underpinnings. ;)

woo. working better now... sort of

with busratio=20 -v -f I get the following:

text flying past faster than a human can read, then stops with final page showing -

Then it just hangs.

If I do 'busratio=20 -v' no -f I get much of the same: but the following

and then Hang

At least it's progress. I wasn't getting this far last night.

This is with the following build:

HD's in sata2_3 and sata2_4

CDROM in GAsata_0

iDeneb 1.4

JmicronATA (which is what everyone was saying was the GA sata driver)

realtek r1000 network driver

nvinject 1GB

voodoo kernel

everything else I avoided, keeping it simple. I don't care about the bootstrap being perfect, just want it to be able to get me to DD's script and a retail install. though, getting to a post build install login screen would be a nice start on that road ;)

Now that you mention it, I believe it was F8 to get the boot options. I have used different distros and boot132 disks in the last few weeks and things start to run together after awhile.

Ha! I can believe that. Part of why I'm trying to take as many notes as possible, to help breadcrumb things for people trying after me. There's a lot of random magic where things start working.

nifty, I get even farther this time. This time the kernel panics!

Sometimes it goes and does the autoreboot on failure, and sometimes just does the kernel panic.

Wish I knew what associated kexts to use for iDeneb. If I continue to have issues, will try iatkos tomorrow and see if that nets any differences.

iatKos didnt get me any farther. less far in fact, mainly because I'm not sure what kexts to load in what section.

what modified kernel works with i7 chips?

for the UD3R should I be loading just the JmirconATA or both it and the ICHx kexts as well?

Ok. Up past that first reboot and logged in. /cheer

Not done futzing with things kext loadout and walkthrough, but for tonight I am.

Thanks everdone for the suggestions and Apple][Guy. Turns out the AHCI settings really are a big culprit. Should have guessed from all the comments in the UD5 thread.

Anyways, in my guide, I will have in bold blinking letters that unless you have an alternate kext install-- KEEP in MIXED IDE/SATA mode on 'Advanced Integrated Peripherals' Enough hitting head into wall for one night, though, I'll take the next steps tomorrow and then maybe later in the week try for the retail install.

At least the familiarity with all the options should help with the walk-through. ;)

dang. well I installed DD's script and got retail and the 10.5.7 combo update installed to the other drive.

followed steps 2-7 and it hangs on starting ocpsd.

should I remove any of the kexts that come in DD's script? or add any of AppleIIGuy's kext in step 5 loading kexts section into one of the folders?

I can boot the ideneb install with the Chameleon bootloader, so I know that it can work just fine, so I can get things added pretty easily.

soooo close I can taste it. any thoughts on what I should add/remove from DD's install?

thanks

drYou

Ok, so did more digging around to figure out what the core problem is.

Here are my thoughts on getting this working.

The Chameleon version makes a difference for booting both the original iDeneb and the new Retail (each on different disks) I can't boot either if using the C2 RC431. I can boot fine if the iDeneb HD is first in boot priority and the iDeneb Chameleon bootloader is running, even if the kexts are even partially screwy.

With DD's script, here is my understanding on what gets loaded if using the C2 bootloader:

LegacyHDAController

LegacyHDAPlatformDriver

HDAEnabler

LegacyJMicronATASATIDE

LegacyJMicron36xSATA

LegacyIOAHCIBlockStorage

IONetworking

ATY_Init

Disabler

DSMOS

OpenHaltRestore

Should I remove everything other than Disabler and DSMOS in "Step 5 load kexts" and Add AppleIIGuy's Kexts into one of the folders instead?

The only other issue I can see if that in the "edit plist" I see that it looks like it is telling things that I have all four DDR3 banks filled and I only have 3 filled so that I can use DDR3 properly.

I don't care about sound, networking, or video being perfect yet, I figure I can trial and error kext and driver loading once I can actually just boot into the retail version.

Ideas?

So the graphics card was the culprit

what I did was remove all the graphics kexts that the EVGA Drivers for the 285 at netkas' site were modifying (essentially what someone else did)

GeForce.kext

GeForceVAdriver.bundle

nvdanv10hal.kext

nvdanv20hal.kext

nvdanv30hal.kext

nvdanv40hal.kext

nvdanv50hal.kext

etc.

you don't have to follow this !!IF!!

after installing 10.5.7, you use pacifist to install the NVidiaDrivers into the S/L/E of the Retail drive.

and make sure you're using the latest netkas ATY_Init.kext from the site.

Anyways, there you go. I still have a lot of work to get everything perfect, but its moving forward nicely.
