Okay, so i've just recently got enough money (and only just) to upgrade my pc. Obviously, i want to hackintosh it, but i need to reuse as many parts as possible. the pc will also be used to run games, so i can't put in an atom board with no PCI express.

things the board needs to have:

slots for DDR2 ram (old, i know, but I can't really afford more)

IDE / PATA connectors

at least one PCI-E 2.0 slot for my graphics card

Problem is, i have no idea what mobo and cpu i should actually buy, and weather or not it will work with OSX.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the cheap but good stuff department we have

mobo:

Gigabyte G31M-ES2L at 43€ good overclock mATX, very compatible.

proc:

Intel E5200, it's called pentium, but it uses 2.5 Ghz, 45nm Core 2 Duo (Wolfdale) architecture, modern, powerfull and cool running at 52€.

Good build, tell us what you choose in the end :P

cheers guys! I'll do some looking around and get back to you if i need any more help.

EDIT: okay, goin' with what pirloui said, i'll have:

Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L mobo

Intel E5200 2.5ghz

2GB ddr2

500gb IDE / ATA whatever you want to call it for windows

40gb IDE / ATA whatever you want to call it for mac os x

nvidia 9600gt graphics card

onboard networking/sound/ machine that goes ping

Does anything look like it would cause a compatibility issue?

Dr Hurts mobo ( GA-945GCM-S2L ) is good if you are going to use the integrated graphics, but supports 667mhz ram at most. If you will use a dedicated graphics card, the G31M-ES2L is better, there is only a couple of € price difference.

The E2180 (2Ghz) is also a good proc, but mainly if you find it second hand. New it's about the same price as the E5200 (2.5Ghz)

EDIT; I just saw your edit: those components should be all fine, the 9600GT is supported since 10.5.6. You can use EFI strings (using uInstaller or OSX86 Tools or equivalent) to get it fully working once booted. Eventually that will depend on how you install, but by all means go with a vanilla install; it's much cleaner and you will be able to update with Apple.

Since you have the two operating systems on two separate disks it's simpler to use the BIOS boot selector than to mess around with boot loaders. (IMO at least).

Good luck and congrats with new computer!

Thanks again, but the bit i've bolded is something i've not heard of before. could you tell me about this?

EDIT: After posting this the site went down, lucky me! Must be that my superpower is to cause static electricity through the internet!

I'm not at home, but to make it short: Vanilla is essentially when one have hardware compatible enough to use the original Apple kernel, which means you can easily update with Apple.

With EFI strings kept and given to the OS by the bootloader (Chameleon for instance), you can have a system install that is almost 100% Apple original, so vanilla, and the cleaner the better.

hey guys im building a new system using the Gigabyte G31M-ES2L

what would be the best iso or should i say the most compatible one to use ? iatkos etc..?

im new to the osx86 comunity but im here to say thanks for the help

This board is so compatible that probably any of the later distros will work. I've seen a lot of people report using iPC and iAtkos. I wouldn't bother with a distro of anything lower than 10.5.6.
