Hi,

I previously installed the Kalyway 10.5.2 version to give OSX a try. I was sufficiently impressed by OSX to purchase a retail 10.5.6 DVD.

My initial attempts to install the retail DVD using boot 132 resulted in failures because I had the HDD partitioned with an MBR scheme. I did find a tutorial on how to mount the retail DVD image, modify the image and burn it to a DVD to but I did not want to go that route. I decided to convert the HDD to use the GUID partition table that OSX wanted, which was pretty quick actually once I had the retail DVD running using boot 132.

Once the HDD had a GPT, I created 3 partitions, and installed OSX on one. I chose not to install the printer drivers and language pack and let the installer do its thing. I assumed after reading all the posts on this forum that I would have to deal with some amount of post installation issues involving installing kexts at the minimum.

The installer actually ran all the way to the end and indicated success, and the system rebooted without any issues. I even had the AppleIntelCPUManagement and Dont steal Mac OS X kexts running. I removed the AppleIntelCPU... kext but the Dont....kext is still loaded and my system boots fine. I am still struggling to get the keyboard and touchpad working even though I tried installing the ApplePS2 controlle and keyboard kexts, USB seems to be working, no sound yet. Wifi works and I have not tried the ethernet yet.

My questions to the experts here is: What do I do with the Dont steal..kext. Do I simply delete it? I did not want to break the installation doing so. I have not connected to the internet because I don't know if the Dont...kext might try to phone home!

I hope somebody can help me

Have a great weekend

if you bought the mac os x cd then why do you still need Don't steal kexts. I followed the instructions on this forum on how to install the retail version and it worked, except sound and networking. you have to figure out what works for you.

Also note that I had a whole partition to install os x. but i guess if you say you have already booted then it wasn't a problem for u

Hi,

Thanks for responding. My question was how to get rid of it not how to get it! Do I need to have the Dont steal kext loaded.?

Have a nice day

As far as i can tell this is the only topic about dell vostro 1520. I was about to create one :P

Everything is working exept : Firewire (02 Micro), SDCard.

I got the graphics (GeForce 9300M GS 256) with NVenabler.kext but needs to be modified for laptops (AA==) as <data> under <key>@0,display-cfg</key> in Info.plist (mine is already modified). Got VGA output as well.

The sleep only works in deepsleep mode (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0) + pc_efiv9 (not chameleon2 RC1).

The trackpad is ok using a patched VoodooPS2Controller.kext (with modified VoodooTrackpad for APLS GlidePad) and Trackpad.prefpane and Keybord.prefpane modified for 10.5.7 (working great). Trackpad has scrolling edges (up/down and left/wright) and "tap-click".

Audio In working with latest VoodooHDA (2.2.2 and prefpanes) needed to push up Recording Level (still no integrated mic).

SpeedStep ok with VoodooPower.kext

ACPIBaterry working as well.

Wifi (as Airport) and ethernet (with RealtekRT1000.kext) OK.

Shutdown/Reboot ok.

It's realy stable and runs well. Any-one bought this made a lucky choice.

Go straight to it :

I made a pack with everything i used so far. It's for 10.5.7 : DELL-Vostro_1520_10.5.7_v2.zip (@MediaFire)

AUDIO CHIPSET : seems to be Sigmatel 9281 (92HD81B1C1)

First installed Vanilla OSX 10.5.6 with a chameleon2 iso (I guess any boot132 iso should work) and updated 10.5.7 same way.

PM,

Thanks for the update, sorry for screwing up you posting plans for the Vostro 1520!

I downloaded you kexts and installed the ACPIbattery, AppleACPIplatform and IOUSBfamily kexts. That gave me the battery icon (~2 hours with a fully charged 6 cell, is that normal?) but broke my reboots. Also I cannot get the right front USB port to work at all, the right rear works fine and I can plug and unplug the mouse.

I really hate using the USB keyboard adn would really love to get the inbuilt keyboard. I noticed your kexts are Vodoo based. What are the chances of the Voodo kexts working under Darwin?

Still trying to get the audio going, works under Ubuntu without problems.

Thanks for your help, hopefully well have more 1520 owners pitching in with their experiences.

Hey guys,

a couple of Vostro 1500 owners chiming in. Got video working with DSDT from the vostro megathread. Got trackpad and multitouch with voodooPS2, battery meter and speed step working with other voodoo kexts. Sleep also working with voodoo sleep fix + removing bluetooth module. Audio is ok as well with VoodooHDA... ONLY thing seeming to be not working is shutdown/restart. It just goes to a black screen and hangs. If we could get shutdown restart working that would be awesome... have tried the psystar fix but no dice. Anyone have any ideas? This is using vanilla kernel...

Thanks!

De-Rail,

Looks like we all have some subtle differences in our installations which makes things that work on one machine not work on the other! PM! posted his kexts which work for his Vodoo installation but did not work with my Vanilla 10.5.6. The screen goes blank and nothing happens.

Out of frustration I installed the ACPIPlatform kext from my previous experiments (Kalyway 10.5.2 -> 10.5.6 -> 10.5.6 -> 10.5.7 -> Panic!). I think the kext was from the 10.5.5 update. Anyway looked like the kext did'nt work because I still ended up with the black screen. I got up to take a break and noticed the machine rebooted after about 30-40s. Finally my 1520 reboots!smile.gif

I can't say it will work for you but it's worth a try.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm still struggling with trying to get my internal keyboard and trackpad working, after that I'll take on the sound beast.

Have a good night

Any chance I could get you to attach a copy of your ACPIPlatform kext? :D

As for the internal kb and trackpad, I had luck with not installing any ps2 drivers upon install, but then hooking up a usb kb and mouse, and installing the VoodooPS2 kexts from superhai.com

@FruitRocks -> Sorry buddy, I havent a simple clue! I'm just another noob experimenting with the "most advanced operating system in the world"! Hang in there, and keep bumping your thread until someone responds, you've got nothing to lose!!

@De-Rail, This is what I currently have and my Vostro 1520 seems to be happy with it. By the way I've upgraded to 10.5.7 and (touch wood!!) so far so good. Now on with the sound monster!! Here's what I use: http://www.mediafire.com/?aneqgimmjyn

Hope that helps

I don't know if my prévious post was clear. I'm using a 10.5.6 Retail then upgrade to 10.5.7. To do this I use a boot132 iso (in fact a chameleon2 iso).

I use pc_efiv9 in order to get the deep-sleep working (other tricks for vostro 1500 and 1510 doesn't work).

The audio is working using latest voodooHDABeta0.2.2 (+prefpanes).

I don't have any shutdown/reboot problem and never had on this computer.

I my pack isn't clear enough, i can explain :

- KEXT folder is ment to be placed on desktop and used with the update.sh script. It updates the /Extra Extensions.mkext

- All other kexts needs to be placed in usual /System/Library/Extensions (and repair permissions or use KextHelper_b7).

Still got one problem with VoodooHDA : the volume isn't working. Anyway this can be set with almos every applications and this is a Beta driver (means that it will be improved).

I suggest you guys don't use a Kalyway nor any pre-made distributions but Vanilla install. It's easy. Just need a classic (basic) boot132 CDROM (or chameleon2).

Have fun,

PM!

Got caught up with other problems, haven't had the time to install the your kexts. Anyway, how are you booting the 1520. In my quest to install the retail (as retail as possible) version of OS X, I needed to convert the HDD to GPT. Although that allowed me to install the retail version, I have major headaches booting the other OSes... Vista and Ubuntu.

Tried looking for tutorials but looks like everybody has a different installation!!

Have a great weekend

PM!

Have another noob question. I installed dell's system software on the vista partition and looks like it snafu'd the partition table. I started getting EBios errors after I reboot following the dell software install. I managed to boot using the EFI 132 CD , but the boot loader can't see the Vista partition. I managed to get the system to boot by reinstalling Chameleon 1.X and was planning to upgrade to Chameleon 2.0 RC1. Noticed that there is a EFI_10 on netkas' website that needs a DSDT.aml file. My question is - Do I need this DSDT thingy? My system was running 10.5.7 just fine and even have time machine working.

As usual, thanks for your help. Have a great weekend

PS: Finally got audio working, installed the latest VoodoHDA and volume keys work too. Mute doesn't work though, and wish I had a little more volume!
