Hey

I'm looking to create a Hackintosh for the fun of it, already got 2 Macs, my PC and a Laptop so I figured why not.

Was just wondering, for a basic Hackintosh which will run Leopard and perform well what price will I be looking at? And also if possible can anyone link me to either a thread which guides people on what hardware to get for a low price budget?

As said, I'm just looking for it to do general tasks such as browse the web, listen to music (Although I'm not too bothered about that as I could use my PC for that.), IM etc.

Thanks very much :D

I would install OSx86 on my current PC but I'm not sure if it would work with my wireless card or VIA SATA...

EDIT: Seen these, I do already have a disk drive, power supply, 2GB DDR2 RAM that I can use in the PC so that should bring the price down slightly.

Comes to around £150 altogether, would it work well?

Should be OK for general tasks, the only problem is that you won't be able to burn disc...

Because it has a Nvidia MCP61S Chipset.

This is because of the chipset driver, which lacks dvd/cd burning...

I got a MCP61 and i can't burn dvd/cd either.

And which video card are you gonna use? the onboard one or a PCI-e card?

Cause i don't think the onboard is going to work, but i could be wrong, does anyone else know this?

If you are buying hardware for a hackintosh, just stay away from VIA/Nforce chipsets, and AMD cpus...

Stick to intel ICH chipsets and core2duo which are supported natively by OSX.

For graphics I would suggest 'any' NVidia 7xxx, 8xxx, 9xxx.

In these days you can get a ICH7 board for very cheap.

For compatibility, Intel is definitely the way to go.

The cheapest solution is to use an intel atom board such as this which is $80 US for a duel core Atom 330, probably £80 UK. For $150 you can get a barebones system such as this MSI unit. Both the board and barebones kit are well supported, and you will find numerous install tutorial for.

You can check the Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S motherboard, which is compatible and of which you can use the internal graphics (GMA 950) 42€

A case can be had for 25€

Processor: a E1400 goes for 42€; and is cool, fairly powerfull and plenty for most tasks. It's a celeron, but it's really a Core 2 duo with less cache. The E5200 is also very good at 55€.

So the cheapest we have here is 42+25+42 ; 109€ or 93£

I bought one of those MSI NetTop 100 boxes from NewEgg. I had an existing 500GB Drive and I added 2GB Memory and DVD Drive. It works well with MSIWindOSx86.iso (Leopard 10.5.4) because this is the desktop equivalent of MSI Wind NetBook (which I had bought few weeks earlier).

I use this as secondary desktop, but it's actually faster than my primary desktop (MSI mPC 915 that I bought about three years ago).

This sounds like an awesome idea! I think I'm going to buy the MSI NetTop 100, so is there any advice you can give on getting it running? Does it require any specific memory or dvd drive? Does the ethernet and everything work off the bat?
