Hi guys.

I'm considering buying a new laptop, so naturally i'd prefer a laptop that can run OSX without any problems. I took a look at the HCL list but it is way too long to find the "Best" option.

Can anyone recommend a laptop (at least 15.4") where everything works for him? wireless, graphics (preferred with Quartz Extreme, if that is even possible), full resolution display, sound, USB2.0, firewire, etc.?

Thanks.

Yeah, it's called the 17" Powerbook.

Just kidding. I'm not really familiar with compatibility for mobile parts, but I'm sure somebody else will answer your question soon.

That's the one I considered initially :D then the 2700$ price tag fell on me like a ton of bricks.

Apple are stupid. If they'd marketed their products at a reasonable price, they would be so profitable. Who on earth is gonna pay 2700$ for an old architecture processor like the G4 when you can get state-of-the-art, all included laptops with Centrino for 1000$ less?

Hope they'll get their things straight. I love their products. not their prices.

Well, OS X runs rather well on my ThinkPad T41p. Sound, ethernet, and Bluetooth work without a hitch, though the Atheros 802.11a/b/g adapter does not work. Graphics are actually pretty snappy in spite of the generic VESA driver. Although, if you think a PowerBook is too pricey, you'll probably feel the same way about a ThinkPad. At any rate, you'd probably do well to pick up a T42 or T42p, as those were in production before the ThinkPad line was sold off to Lenovo. While the IBM build quality was unrivaled, it's too early to tell if the same holds true for the new Lenovo line.

OK odedia it was a slow period at work for a second, so I tried to find a setup that would work. Here is what I found :

The Averatec 4200 series.

1.7 Ghz Pentium M, 80 GB hard drive, 512mb ram, DVD+/- burner, built-in wireless lan, and only 4.7 pounds. If the wireless lan doesn't work, you can buy the USB d-link for around $20 on newegg.

Best part is that it is one of the few laptops that uses the Intel 915g / GMA900, so that it will run OSx86 perfectly with Quartz Extreme and Coreimage.

It only has a 13.7" widescreen (I know you wanted >15"), but it was the only laptop in stock online I could find with the fully functional chipset.

Available directly from averatec here http://www.shopaveratec.com/product.asp?sku=2701607 for $1350, or from Amazon here for $1275. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00...1037772-5159866

That should do everything you need, in a light package and a good price. Now that you had me find that, I want one too :) .

i have an Acer TravelMate 4650(newegg just look for a notebook with intel gma900 gfx), everything except lan and wireless works perfect.....has qe(ci) working great and its pretty intense....recently bought a dlink dwl-g122 for internet

I'm not sure, but wouldn't this one just be perfect?

looks good to me, you will probly have to modify the gfx kexts to work with the mobile gma900 from the hardware id of 2582(dont flame if thats wrong) to the 2592 id on MOST of the mobile gma900 chips

and as the lan and wireless chips are not actually mentioned, dont count on either....stick to the dlink DWL-G122 HW revision B1(got mine locally in the US at CompUSA)

You, sir, do not understand how apple works. They may sell 10% of what dell sells, BUT they do make a profit. Their margins are not being pinched like dell's are. Apple may not have a lot of people buying computers, but on the ones that do, they make a considerable ammount of money. They are already in the top 5 computer manufactures, with MUCH better margins than them.

well, i dont think he was taking that from the prospective of apple and their profit....frankly...i dont think he cared at all...at the standpoint of a consumer, i dont care what apple is making off of their sales...i just care how cheap it is, so regardless of what ranking they are with the other manufacturers and what their profit margins are...they still charge too much for their hardware

Could the same be said for certain car manufactures? Just because a company makes something doesn't mean they must cater to you based on your financial situation. I don't expect Porsche or Mercedes to price a car so I can afford it, just because I want it. Its called a niche luxury market. Get over it...

porsche and mercedes actually perform decent for their money....a 2700$ outdated architecture mac?

I don't see the gun to your head, forcing you to buy it. Me? I quite enjoy my 17"er...It was well worth the money, and has paid dividends left and right.

Buy your Centrino, install an unsupported OS, and accept the fact that the support will never be there. You get what you pay for.

That's why Apple also makes the iBook, which starts at $999.
