Hi, I know this is redundant, everyone is making i7 core hacks and stuff but I'm a bit confused about which psu to get.

I'm probably gonna use:

MOBO: Gigabyte UD5

CPU: i7 920

RAM:

2x Patriot Extreme Viper 3x 2gb 1600 8-8-8-24

or

2x OCZ 3x 2gb 1600 7-7-7-24

GPU: probably a SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON HD 4870 1024MB (I'm open to suggestions here!)

CPU FAN:

either Zalman CNPS 9900 LED or Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme 1366RT

CASE: probably THERMALTAKE VK60001N2Z ELEMENT S

HDD: seagate 1tb + seagate 1.5tb

DVD drive: hmm I don't even use these... what about pioneer sata drive for 30$? question is solved. I feel that my next machine (after this one) won't have a dvd or bluray drive. I have no use for bluray either..

So that leaves the PSU... a friend of mine who built his machine a few months ago wanted something silent so he ended up changing his psu for an Enermax so I guess I'll go with that brand unless you got great suggestions... but I don't know what wattage I need.

I'm planning to overclock as close to 4ghz as I can with that mobo, cpu, fan, case.. I think I will reach at least 3.8.. I'm aiming for 4ghz.

Will 600watt be enough?

Thanks for your ideas/suggestions/comments/tips/whatever

Thanks!

Enermax makes the more silent PSUs if you can afford them. :/

I would recommand a modular one, like the Modu82+ 625W. Otherwise, you'll have a huge bunch of cables hanging from it.

Yes, 600W is enough.

If you're short of money, these one are fine too, though not so silent:

• Corsair HX620

• Silverstone Strider ST60F (rev. 2)

• Coolermaster Silent Pro M 600W

Don't buy a Zalman: it's an old {censored}, especially for such a demanding CPU. The Thermalright is great with high airflow, but don't hope any silence with it's 1600RPM fan, whereas the Scythe Mugen 2 has a silent PWM fan and costs only 40$!

And I don't know what kind of case you'd like, but in order to connect sata devices without having to move the HDD cage, you'll need a deep one. A Lian-li or any case fitting E-ATX motherboard.

Thanks for your advice on various brands!!

I'll probably go with the modul82+ 625watt I found one at a good price here.. I think it worth it.

About the CPU fan I saw the scythe one and I've been told that they are great at making silent fans... but as I would like to overclock the i7 as much as possible, I took fans used in overclocking guides and ex58-ud5 reviews in which they overclocked the i7 920.

I'll read about the mugen 2...

Another thing that makes me wonder is if I can get any cpu fan with my mobo and 6 sticks of ram. I don't want to end up with a fan too big for my mobo.

You think I will need a case big enough for E-ATX?

I kinda like the element S... I'll read more to make sure it works or to find another case.

Thanks!!

Edit: About the case, I think the Element S will be fine, I remember making a computer with sata on the side like that in a mid tower and I remember that it was tight and really not idea.. but the case was smaller than the Element S.

For the rest, I think I'm set, thanks a bunch for the suggestions and for making me rethink about some stuff.

Edit2: I think I'll get 1333 ram instead of 1600.. it seems to be better with overclocking.

Edit3: About the Scythe Mugen 2, all I found was the heatsink only... what fan should I put on it.. I'm not sure

For the heatsink fan, you could use the Scythe Slipstream 1900RPM (110CFM!), but you'll need a fan controller or at least a cheap fan mate 2, because it's pretty noisy at full speed.

I looked this Thermaltake case and I think it will fit too. There's enough room and cable management holes.

It seems to be a nice case, though I'm almost sure the 2 60mm fans are whining.

I don't know where you picked that idea about 1333 better for overclocking, but it seems absurd to me. It's always the higher the better, but 1600 is well enough.

Patriot is not a very common brand in France, but I've read good things about some of their products. Another great choice would be these ones:

That'd be my personal choice. And as you can see, people are very satisfied. -_-
