It is the same that boot with USB Flash or a USB Card Reader with SD Card inserted, it isnt new at least for me.

But what pxavierperez pointed out is slightly different i guess,he means booting with internal card reader.

USB boot option is there on(BIOS) most of the PCs but booting directly from SD card(internal) is different and as far as i know, its may not be possible with PCs as you would require some mecahnism to initialize that bus during pre-boot environment, the same holds true for booting from express card slot.

EDIT: i did find that inorder to boot from internal card reader, you will require some workarounds.

If interested : http://mydellmini.com/forum/general-discus...workaround.html

Acer 2920 can Boot from SD Card Slot and my Acer 4320 Boot from external USB Card Reader.

Wow.thats gr8

I have one question. If you intend to boot from internal card reader from ur Acer 2920,you u have any special option in BIOS to do so.Coz in my hp laptop there is only USB boot option.Does the same option work for you ?

If so,then u have SD card reader on USB bus.

For me i have on PCI bus.Do u know any pc which can boot from int card reader with reader on PCI bus.Coz if thats possible then booting from express card will also be and that would be great.

Most built in memory card readers are connected via USB internally.. And the BIOS in nearly all PC motherboards and laptops supports booting from USB Mass Storage devices these days.

A modern PC should be able to boot from any USB memory card reader, thumb drive, etc... as long as the memory card is formatted correctly. Weither or not your OS supports being booted from a USB device is a different story.

There are a few netbook models out there with memory card readers connected via PCI Express internally. (Acer Aspire One for example). Booting from these requires special BIOS support.

  • 6 months later...

Been more of a lurker since entering the OSx86 scene a few months ago. MSI WIND u100 here running BIOS .10f, Dual boot Win 7 & Iatkos 7i (Leopard 10.5.7)

I currently use my SD CARD as startup volume by setting my bios to boot first from 'USB Hard Disk" There is a configuration setting in the MSI Wind's BIOS to set mimic options for the Card Reader to FDD or Hard Disk. I use the Hard Disk option. I then set the BIOS to boot from USB Hard Disk (my SD card)

To set up the SD Card (I'm currently using a cheap 4gig SD) I used Disk Utility (format with HFS+) to restore the Iatkos 7i DVD image onto the SD Card.

I then installed Chameleon 2 RC3 from Dr. Hurt on the SD Card.

I can now boot from the SD card and see not only the Iatkos disk image (which has quite a few utilities included with the installer - makes a perfect rescue disk) but also my Win 7 partition and my regular Leopard partition.

For any of you MSI owners who may sometimes tweak a little too much and cause a kernel panic or other such catastrophes, I highly recommend this setup.

Regards
