iPC OSX 10.5.6 was supposedly based off a retail DVD. I've also read somewhere, forgotten where, that Retail DVD based versions could be officially upgraded (Apple Software Update) without losing anything, except the custom kext's installed, and not bricking, Apple's equivalent of the bsod.

Is this true? I've got a 10.5.7 update ready to go... but im scared of bricking as i actually use OSX 10.5.6 as my main pc.

iPC 10.5.6 is based on a 10.5.4 retail DVD with the 10.5.6 update applied to it. Or something like that anyway, I haven't looked at it.

But it doesn't really matter.

With most of the Hackintosh distributions it's possible to get a near-retail install, simply by deselecting any patches under 'custom installation' before you start installing.

Generally, whether an update will work or not depends on how close your install is to retail. If you depend on lots of patches to get your system working, updating it will most likely break it. The closer you can get to retail, the better.

So it pays off to learn about your installation and exactly what modifications you are applying to it in order for it to run on your hardware.

And it's a good idea to open the update installer package in Pacifist (google it) and take a look at what will be updated.
