ainsleyclark
Hi there, After realizing I couldn't play Call of Duty 4 on my laptop I thought it was time for a new computer. Buying a laptop was probably the worst decision I have ever made; they seem to be getting cheaper and worser. However I have successfully installed Leo 4 All 10.5.1 (I think it was quite some time ago!) on my Laptop I was very pleased. I was only able to do this helpfulness of the Insanely Mac community. Anyway my question is could anyone redirect me on some tutorials/blogs/information sites about understanding what needs to go into a computer and why; better still what is the ideal setup for a hackintosh. Using a computer is not my weakness but understanding what consists of one and what makes a good one (hardware) is. Do I have to decide on a distro then get the relevant hardware or is it all universal. I seem to remember downloading around 8 or 9 distros! Upon installing my hackintosh on my laptop, I had 2 problems. One being the graphics card was not supported and I am still stuck at 800x600 on a 22 inch screen. The other being my Ethernet port not working after installing Leo 4 All (it didnt work on windows after either :S). This is why I wanted to ask you guys about graphics cards. I want to have a super duper card (512mb) with 2 VGA outputs, can you suggest any that is 100% compatible with a distro. I also wanted to ask about Ram for a hack. I know that Mac Pro's can support up to 32gb, can hacks do this to? Does anyone know as well if Windows 7 (when it will be released) will support more Ram. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou Insanley Mac! Ainsley... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/169157-building-my-hackintosh-from-scratch/ Share on other sites
SquidLord
according to THIS, and the long list that it provides, the 9800GTX is supported; just check both links I provided. grice
You can look at the hardware wiki http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page to see if your stuff is supported. If your motherboard supports vanilla install and your graphics card already has Apple drivers, you're almost there. Use grub to boot the install DVD. Use Chameleon 2.0 bootloader. 9800GTX is fine. 9800GT, 9600GT.... all fine. Get UInstaller and an EFI string from it to make it work. Retail install is definitely the way to go (as long as you choose a mobo which supports the vanilla kernel). I personally would stay away from this or that distro because one software update could hose everything. Point updates, in particular, usually kills it. My build is now my main machine, everything working 100% and I'm REALLY happy with it, thanks to everyone at insanelymac. ainsleyclark
Thankyou for your help grice. I have decided on the Intel Quad Core 2.83ghz. I defiantly want a Asus board - because I have heard such good things about them. I have been doing my research and haven't any recommendations for what board to go for with the P45 chipset. Has there been successful hacks with the P45, if so which motherboard.
