conga
I'm currently running 10.5.6. I've got sound in and out , wireless and sleep, wake etc. Basically everything i wanted in my Hackintosh. I want to update to the latest OSX (10.5.7) but have read various forums/ posts of people who have had problems. My question is not is it safe to update but is it really worth it - ie - if it ain't broke don't fix it. I've come from a PC using background and most XP updates seem to be security issues rather than any tangible difference that can be percieved by the computer User. What do ya reckon? cogombo
I upgraded from iPC 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 and I haven't seen any differences of performance (but some problems..). WilliamDaBastrd
Microsoft and Apple function very differently on the updating topic. Apple focuses heavily on memory footprint and performance, while Microsoft focuses on security patches and stability fixes. I would say that it is worth the update, I have seen a performance increase and better graphics support. I lost audio, but that was it. Even then, it took a simple click with kexthelper to fix. mschilling
Here are my two results, back to back. Identical os, using diskutil restore, on two new drives: seagate is their 32mb cache 500gb barracuda, and the wd is their caviar black 1TB and also with 32mb buffer. The newer version does better. It also gave my old laptop a big boost in battery life. Problems were fairly easy to solve so far. 10.5.6_with_Seagate.txt 10.5.7_with_WD_Black.txt Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/169139-why-update-to-1057-or-update-at-all/#findComment-1170697 Share on other sites
Oh the Huge Manatee
The update is pretty low risk. You'll have to reinstall any HDA or power management patches you have. Battery lasts 33% longer for some people... for me, it made sleep work (almost). alfer
Make sure you have a good backup image of your current working system. I tried to upgrade twice and get nothing but the blue screen. I can remotely connect to the machine and try to fix stuff, but not knowing why there is a problem (I assume it's a graphics driver problem), there's nothing to fix. Of course I reinstalled all the kexts that made the previous version working, did the permissions dance, flushed caches and the whole 9 yards, but every time after 2 or 3 reboots the machine proves to be as dead as a doornail. Even remote login won't work anymore. I use Acronis to image the drive it is installed on so it only takes me 15 minutes or so to restore, but it gets old after a while. In any case, I would not attempt to upgrade without a known good image of the drive. Otherwise you're asking for trouble. Sure there are always some that have no problems, but are you going to be one of them? mschilling
It's always a risk updating. That's why I would suggest restoring your drive to another drive (disk utility), installing chameleon, and installing, updating, and booting from that first. If it doesn't work, you can take your time with fixes before deciding to do your main system. Me too, I am running iDeneb 10.5.6 on my Dell Inspiron 530, everything work perfect, include shutdown/restart, I did not test sleep yet. but after update to 10.5.7, system getting slow, and shutdown/restart not working anymore. I go back to 10.5.6, very happy with this.
