thepresence0
I am completely new to building a Hackintosh. What I am looking to do, is build a machine that I can use for solid standard def video editing in Final Cut, and general desktop use. I already know that simply buying a Mac would be both a more solid investment, and much much easier... but well.... I am about to be a Dad and can't bloody afford anything outside of the rather dainty Mac Mini - and I just can't justify that when I can build something so much beefier at almost half the cost. Now, I have done a fair bit of research on the OSX86Wiki, and these are the parts I am planning to use (half of them are already ordered)... Processor: E5200 (ordered) Motherboard: Gigabyte EG31-ES2L (ordered) Ram: 4GB G-Skill DDR2 800Mhz Ram (already have) Video Card: PNY 9400GT 1GB (undecided, 50% sure this is what i'll go with) Hard Drive: Undecided, but this shouldn't matter too much. Case+PSU: Also undecided - making my decision this week. I also already own an Apple Wireless Keyboard that I'm planning to use with this machine (Thinking of getting an IOGEAR USB Bluetooth Adapter from Frys, only $14.99 and OSX compatible). I would also like to add a wireless card, but I need to a do a bit more research. Suggestions there would be great. So, here are my basic questions: -Does anyone have a similar build, and how solid does it run for you? -If I decide to go with this build, what OSX install method do you suggest? (iPC is looking like a strong candidate, but I'm still not sure.) opscott
I have a very similar build to yours (see the link below to read my post) and so far I am very very happy with it!! http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=168138 It runs very solid with only a few issues, and I think you will be pleased with this setup. I went with a Retail 10.5.6 DVD installation method because it *should* give you less headaches when it comes to updating (I'm already updated to 10.5.7). If you look around on the torrent sites you can actually find a Retail DVD download (will help save money since your a Dad), but you will need a dual layer DVD for the burn. I used a very good guide to get me started that you can find below: http://an43.com/osx/ Hope it all works out for you, shoot me a message if I can be of any help! thepresence0
Thank you for the help. I am weighing whether or not to go with a retail install or not. Is it possible to install off a copy that came with another Mac?
