Hello all,

Ive been lurking around the forums for a long time and had a good setup with my q6600, gigabyte p35-ds3l going for a while, but heading into my major classes and am going to need something that is just a little more powerful, well not so much more powerful but on a newer platform and thought this to be a good time to move to the i7 platform with DDR3 etc..

One requirement is I need dual dvi to work. I am going with a samsung or hp 30" monitor over duals. I tried it out today and just fell in love. I think this will be really nice working with my electronic cad programs and programming.

So anyway I can get some assistance with a i7 platform computer with working dual dvi video? Ive been reading threads through and through and I think I am just confusing myself on what I need to get:

Here is what I have so far:

Case:Antec Three Hundred Black

PSU: Corsair 650TX 650W PSU

RAM:OCZ Gold 6gb DDR31600

Video: From what I have read, the 9800gtx is still the king for true compatibility in OSX, so for now, it'll do, but I would like something a little more powerful someday: EVGA 9800GTX 512mb

HD: I havent found too much on raid compatibility, but if possible, Id like to put in these:

2xWestern Digital Caviar Black 500gb

Optical:LG 22x DVD Burner-Black

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 2.66ghz

Mobo: ???? I have no idea what to pick.

Also these are the two monitors I am considering :

Samsung Syncmaster 305T 30"

HP L3065 30"

I thank you for any advice given. I will keep reading for a good board to use with i7 platform and if it has raid, thats a big bonus, but not mandatory.

I can understand the lust for something more powerfull, but I doubt you'll really use the extra horsepower.

My advice would be to keep your current rig for yet a while...

If you need to burn some money get the video-card and the monitor.

You should buy a Gigabyte EX58-UD5. It's a great board and there are a lot of guides about it.

And don't forget to pick extra fans for your case, plus a good heatsink like Scythe's Mugen 2. In an open box like the Three Hundred, Intel's stock {censored} is very noisy.

For the display, the Samsung's fine but I would buy a Dell Ultrasharp.

The best current card for OS X is the 48xx series by ATI. I'm thinking the 4890 1gb 1ghz edition....But a 4870 512mb is already better than the 9800GTX+

Also, the Mac edition nVidia GTX 285 is coming soon so we will have support for the GTS 260, 280 275 etc soon too, I'm pretty sure...

Thanks, I was partial to ATi to begin with. I dont know if I will go for the full 4890, but the 4870 looks like a good fit for what I will be using.

@TomCom

Thanks for the suggestion on the motherboard. I will look up the thread and get some files together. Yeah Dell has a nice 30", but the price is a few hundred more than what I want to spend on top of the money I made from the sale of my desktop. Ill look up some reviews, but Im looking for a good 30" monitor, nothing more.

@Pirloui: I sell all my rigs before I buy another one, the cost isn't that much :( The biggest thing is the monitor which will be kept for a long time. I usually max my pc pretty hard, Ive gotten my q6600 to bow down a few times.

I do CAD on my iMac with a second 20" display, and find the two screen setp vastly superior to a single large display as it allows you to place your main window on the primary display and the place all the tool and material paletes on the second with room left over to look at refrence materials. The other advantage is that 2 X 20 or 2 X 24 gives you more screen real estate for less $ than a single 30" display.

What sort of CAD are you working with? I will primarily be working with electronic cad and maybe a solidworks project on my own agenda.

The only reason why I wasn't going for dual screens to begin with was because on windows they {censored} me off. I will research some more on some good screens for a dual setup. Thank You.
