iammike
I've been searching and searching and barely a mention of getting Leopard up and running on this system. The big mystery about this system on the net seems to be the motherboard. I can't figure out for the life of me what motherboard is in there! lol i7 920 3GB DDR3 SATA HD and DVD ATI 4850 Anyway, I see much improved support for the i7 and the 4850 since last time I checked for this system...just no discussion on this particular system or what motherboard it might have. Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/166942-leopard-on-gateway-fx6800-01e/ Share on other sites

JDudeC05
I have successfully installed MAC OS X Snow Leopard on my Gateway FX6800-01e. It took me about a week off and on to get it fully working. If there is still interest in this topic, I am willing to give a detailed outline of what I did to make it work. Let me know. JDudeC05
Introduction I am a “computer guy.” Professionally, I work for a multi-billion dollar manufacturer. I am a Microsoft Professional and spend all day working on projects and resolving issues related Microsoft technologies. We do not have Apple computers. In fact, all the environments I have worked in the last 20 years did not have Apple computers. But two things have change recently that has “perked” my interest in Apple hardware/software. About a year ago I purchased an iPod Touch. This little piece of equipment is great! It works flawlessly. It does more than I could possibly have expected from it. This device alone has opened up my eyes to Apple’s products. This was the first eye opening experience. The second eye opening experience happened about 8 months ago. I was working with two consultants on two different IT related projects and both of these consultants brought their Apple laptops. My first though was “great, this is going to be problematic.” Boy, was I wrong. Both of these consultants were able to get their respective jobs done efficiently in our Microsoft environment, all without leaving the native Mac OS. Needless to say I was impressed. At that point I could justify getting a Mac. However, I had just purchased the best computer Best Buy was offering at the time " a Gateway FX6800-01e. (I did not think that my wife was going to be happy with me purchasing another computer so soon.) Therefore, I decided to give it a try to run Mac OS on my Gateway computer. Why not, it has plenty under the hood. Fortunately, I was successfully doing this. Because I am a “noob” at Mac OS as well as UNIX, which Mac OS X is built on, I almost gave up from the frustration. I hope that this document can save you the frustration I went through. Computer Specs Gateway FX6800-01e - Intel Core - i7 " 920 Processor (2.66GHz Quad-Core) - TBGM01 Motherboard with X58 Chipset - 9 GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM (I upgraded from 3 to 9) - 1TB 7200rpm Serial ATA II/300 hard drive. (Original 750 died.) This drive is running Windows 7 and is drive #5. - 500GB 7200rpm Serial ATA II/300 hard drive. This drive is running OS X Snow Leopard and is drive #0. - Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512 (I am an Nvidia guy.) - Serial ATA DVD/Burner - Intel 82567LF-2 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter - Realtek High Definition Audio What You Need - Empire EFI 1.04 (I downloaded this from piratebay.org) - A retail copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (I purchased the 5 user pack for $49.99. A single user license is $29.99. Most Best Buy stores will have these.) - A USB thumb drive might come in handy if you need to get a file off of the Internet. (This assumes you have another computer available or can boot into another OS on your computer.) - Several utilities to help you with the permissions in the “Extensions” folder. General Outline 1.) Download and create EFI CD disk. 2.) Boot computer from EFI CD disk. 3.) Install MAC OS Snow Leopard onto a free partition or hard drive. 4.) Boot into MAC OS Snow Leopard for the first time. 5.) Install drivers (kexts). Network, video, and sound. 6.) Boot into Mac OS Snow Leopard and enjoy the full Leopard experience. Part 1 " EFI EFI was a big key to getting this working. I tried several OS X distributions that just would not work. EFI and a retail copy of Snow Leopard worked flawlessly. 1.) Download and burn EFI to a CD-R. 2.) Boot your computer from the EFI CD-R. (Note: You may need to change your BIOS so that your DVD drive is the first boot device. Sometime, there is a special key to hit during the boot process to select your DVD drive to boot.) 3.) Empire EFI will boot. A great picture of Darth Vader, the guy from Star Wars, will show up on your screen. Wait about a minute before going onto the next step. 4.) Eject the EFI CD-R from your DVD drive. 5.) Place your Retail Snow Leopard install disc in the DVD drive. Select F5 key. 6.) Empire EFI will detect the Leopard install disc. Select the disk to start the installation of Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Part 2 " Snow Leopard Installation For me, Snow Leopard was an easy installation, especially since I had a hard drive to dedicate to the OS. The Gateway FX6800-01e has drive bays that can be easily accessed from the front of the computer to install additional Serial ATA hard drives. If you do not want to purchase an additional hard drive, the hard drive that came standard in this Gateway system is very roomy " 750GB. This hard drive should be able to accommodate 2 operating systems easily. Partition your hard drive so that you have at least a 15GB to install MAS OS X Snow Leopard. Hard drive partitioning is outside the scope of this document. If done improperly, you can loose everything on your hard drive. You may need to purchase a utility to help you change your current partition(s). If you have never done this before, or do not understand the process have someone help you that does understand it, or do what I did and purchase an additional hard drive just for the MAC OS. (Note: You must have your hard drive partitioning done BEFORE you install the MAC OS. If you do not, stop right now and either partition your hard drive or purchase another hard drive and star the process over.) The following URL has a good tutorial on how to Partition and Format a Hard drive in OS X " Tiger and Leopard: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html I will step you through the process I used to install OS X Snow Leopard on my 500GB hard drive: Once, the Mac OS X Snow Leopard installation starts it will want to know where you want the OS installed. I did the following to select my drive: 1.) Access the “Disk Utility” from the menu choices at the top of the screen. 2.) I selected the 500GB hard drive in the left hand column. 3.) Once I selected the 500GB hard drive, the “Partition” tab appeared. 4.) I selected the “Partition” tab and then selected “1 Partition” from the “Volume Scheme” drop down menu. 5.) I then selected the “Untitled 1” partition and named it “MAC OS X” with the “Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. 6.) Also, I selected the “GUID partition Scheme” so that I could install Mac OS X to this drive. 7.) I selected “Apply.” After the partitioning and the formatting was completed I exited the Disk Utility. The drive that was just partitioned and formatted should now have a big green arrow on it showing that it is available to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. 8.) Select this drive to install. 9.) After Snow Leopard is installed, simply hit “Reboot.” More EFI Eject your Snow Leopard disc and insert the Empire EFI disc and boot from the EFI disc again. This time you should see your newly installed Snow Leopard partition. Simply choose the Snow Leopard partition and it will boot. Run through Setup Assistance. Once Setup Assistance is done, right click “Finder” in the Dock and select “New Finder Window” and be sure to select “Empire EFI” and go to “Extra/Post-Installation and be sure to run “myHack Installation” first. This installs permission fixing script and Chameleon which enables you to boot to your Snow Leopard partition and other partitions. Now shutdown Mac OS X and verify that you can boot into MAC OS X and your other operating systems, if you have them. You might need to change the boot order in your BIOS. I know I did. Mac OS is now installed and is bootable on your PC! What a great feeling, you have Mac OS X Snow Leopard installed and running. Now we need to get your hardware to work with OS X. Part 2 " Install Drivers (kexts) I can say that I was overjoyed at getting OS X installed on my computer, but it did not take long for me to realize that “things” were quite not right. As soon as I tried to access the Internet through the Safari browser I could tell more work was needed. Safari could not gain access to the Internet since the driver for my network card was not loaded. I need to fix this ASAP; unfortunately, I needed to figure out what “kexts” are. Most of my time with Mac OS X so far has been figuring out what hardware I have and where I can get the proper drivers, or “kexts” as they are called in Mac OS X. Gateway is not very forth coming with what hardware is actually installed in the FX6800-01e, especially the hardware that is integrated on the system board. It took me a long time to find and try drivers that appeared would work on my system. Fortunately for you I am sharing this information so that you to not have to go through the trial and error that I went through. Specifically, we need to install drivers (kexts) for the network card, sound, and video. Once these drivers are installed, your system should be able to do anything you want to do. Network Card - Intel 82567LF-2 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter After I noticed the problem with Safari, I put priority on getting the network card installed as I kept rebooting between Windows 7 and the MAC OS to try to figure out how to get kexts installed. Once the network card drive was installed and working properly, I did not need to keep rebooting my computer to get the information I needed. I could just find the information in the Mac OS using the Safari browser. The driver that you need for this network card is called “Intel8256MM.kext.” I will attempt to upload this file with this document. If I am not successful, then do a search on Insanelymac.com to find the driver. It’s out there. That’s how I found it. Once you have downloaded the file and extracted it, you should see something that looks like a clear Lego brick. This brick needs to be copied to the following location: System\Library\Extensions I simply copied the file their through the Finder. It copied fine after I supplied my password. However, you also need to fix the permissions on the files in the Extension folder for them to work properly. There are a number of utilities like “EFIStudio” that will do this for you; however, you can also use the Repair Disk Permissions button of “Disk Utility” utility to fix the permissions. Once the permissions are fixed reboot Mac OS X and setup your network card. 1. Select the “Apple” icon on the menu. 2. Select “System preferences…” 3. Select the “Network” icon under “Internet & Wireless” 4. Select your “Ethernet” connection to configure your network card. (I use DHCP at home.) Video Card - Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512 I have a wide screen display and seeing it in 1024-768 stretched drives me crazy. (It natively runs at 1920x1080.) Therefore, I decided to address installing the video card. I felt that it was fairly safe that I was going to find a video driver since most Macs use Nvida graphics cards. (I was correct.) (Note: I do not know which drivers you will need to use for the ATI RADEON HD 4850 that comes standard on the Gateway FX6800-01e. If someone finds out please add this information to this discussion.) I downloaded and installed “Latest_NVinject.0.2.1.kext.” This “kext” file is installed just like the Intel network kext. Don’t forget to fix the permissions before you reboot. Sound - Realtek High Definition Audio This was the hardest “kext” to find, maily because there were so many options. Eventually, I found one that works " “VoodooHDA.kext.” Download and install this kext just like the Intel network card and NVidia graphics adapters. Also, I believe that you nee to delete the “AppleHDA.kext” from the Extensions folder. Again, remember to fix the permission before you reboot the computer. Now you have my knowledge of install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on your Gateway FX6800-01e. I will try to respond to your questions or comments in regards to this process. I will only answer questions about this process. I cannot answer other questions that do not pertain, as I do not have a vast experience doing this. There is a new one (842P181G), I will install it this week and let you know. If this doesn't work, I have on the way an ASUS Rampage II Gene - XFX GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB - COOLMAX CU750W PSU. Duncan MacLeod III
Trying This now on the gateway. I bought a second NVIDIA PCI-E card for the system because it would not even boot into the install screen on the stock ATI card. It would either KP or boot into an extremely distorted non usable GUI It took me 2 tries with the second card i bought, you have to put the NVIDIA card as the default card so it can be booted to by OSX. I set windows to only show the ATI card, which goes to the other input on my monitor. The card i bought was about 50 dollars for a GEFORCE 210 with 512 megs of ram. More than adequate for any OSX TASK. I also have an M-Audio USB sound card which should still work because there are native OSX drivers for them. I will report back shortly with results. nchernoff
I am running snow leopard 10.6.2 (mostly) on an FX6800-01e with the ATI 4850, a Tenda 802.11n wifi adapter ($14.95) and a powerwave usb audio adapter. It is also running an Elgato Hybrid tv tuner. PC EFI 10.6 and a bunch of specialized kexts for the 4850. The process was not for the faint of heart. You need need a different, more compatible video card to start the process. the 4850 is the last step. I was not able to get the onboard audio running, so I used the powerwave which always works. The cheap n wifi adapter has been doing a good job of streaming hd video from ABC. It is stable once it boots, but I have had some random boot video failures. fx-macosx-fan
A huge thanks to JDudeC05 for the detailed info. My current FX6800 OS is 64-bit, does the Snow Leopard OS have a 64-bit option to install, and if not, does it matter with the Mac OS? fx-macosx-fan
So this topic has been very quiet, which is no surprise. Since I've gotten my hackintosh up & running, I have barely slowed down with the new projects I've been doing on my new "Mac." Btw, I ended up installing my system using an app. called ##### (with instructions - easy to find by typing '##### hackintosh' into google.) It was far less troublesome & much easier than the options offered here. However, one big issue I have been unable to find a fix to is the fact my hackintosh will only boot into 32bit, despite the system is indeed a healthy 64bit on the windows side. I've tried every trick I could find online & none of the fixes work. Has anyone else running the fx6800-01e with mac been able to get their system to boot into 64bit?
