Hey everybody, I'm completely stumped on this one. Everything seems to be running beautifully, but every 3-4 days my machine will become completely unresponsive. The video output shuts off (monitor blacks out) and it's not just the video since remote control of the machine says it goes offline.

Has anyone run into random crashes/freezes like this?

Are you overclocked (memory, CPU, GPU) or is the machine getting hot (such as in an desk made for a computer that always has poor ventilation for some reason)?

Are you dual boot? if so, does Windows/Unix or whatever have the same issue?

This could be anything from simple overheating to a failing component or software issue. I would look into cooling and if thats not the case I would try memory and so on.

It's definitely not a cooling issue...windows can run for weeks on end and until I just updated to 10.5.6, I had a Kalyway 10.5.2 install that worked flawlessly. The only issue I know of is the JMicron memory issue. On Kalyway 10.5.2 I used to get kernel panics with more than 2GB of ram in, and then I updated the drivers manually and was able to get it to stop. The iPC install is supposed to have the updated drivers, and the symptoms are different (black screen vs. kernel panic) but maybe that's it?

You may be right - You can't discount hardware issues though because different OS's (and versions thereof) make use of hardware in different ways (memory being one example).

I had a dual boot XP/BSD machine back in the day that would run fine in XP and would randomly crash in BSD - I finally swapped the memory and the issue went away.

Is there any logs indicating what is going on at the time of the crash?

It is probably a software issue like you stated but the oddity is the fact that it works for days at a time before a crash (which points to hardware).

Sorry I can't be of more help - random crashes are a pain to diagnose to say the least.

Ok, so it turns out it is a kernel panic situation, I had just never caught it before the video went dead. It just happened again and I grabbed the info on it, but I'm not sure where to go from here.

edit: For what it's worth, I've disabled PME and wake on ring - a suggestion I saw in another thread after some searching. I'll update with results for any who care.
