hackintastic
Hello, I'm thinking to buy a new pc, one of the OS's is going to be Mac OS X. For now Leopard but i don't wanna mis Snow Leopard. The hardware I'm thinking of: Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E5200 GigaByte GA-G31M-ES2L Zotac GF9800GT AMP! Hitachi HDT721075SLA380 Samsung SH-S223F Kingston HyperX 4 GB DDR2-1066 Kit Will this run properly ? Is this common hardware?(I mean when Snow Leopard is released, don't i have to wait for 10 years for I can run it?) Any suggestions in this price range? Thanks for helping this n00bzor! apreichner
The motherboard is a good choice. Everything else looks like pretty good hardware for Leopard, but the processor is a little out-dated. If you are constrained on price, I would sacrifice elsewhere for a better processor. Like 500gb instead of 750gb, or 800mhz RAM instead of 1066, or a cheaper Lite-On DVD drive instead of the Samsung. This may not be important right now, but if you are going to think about running Snow Leopard, you're going to want at least a Core 2 Duo. mic.mac.hack
I LOVE PENTIUM-DUAL CORES! They're such good CPUs if your short of cash and will run snow leopard for sure. They actually ARE Core 2 Duos just with less L2 cache, Also really really good to overclock, one guy got your CPU to 3.2GHz with stock aircooling! Get a pentium dual-core if you don't wan to fork out more for a Core2Duo. But I still agree with apreichner, don't bother with the 1066MHz RAM, read an article that showed NO performance difference between 1066 and 800. I've also tried it myself and the difference is unoticable. If you want a 750GB hard drive, go for it! And the DVD drive would probably be just as good if you opted for a cheaper option. Also that 9800GT, nice choice, but what Power supply were you planning on using? I bought a 9800GT and it crashes in graphics intensive programs on my KPower 400W PSU. You need a quality PSU with dual 12V Rails. I had to go and spend another $93 to get mine working. Bought a Seasonic S12 II 430W, hasn't arrived yet though I'm quite confident it will work. Good luck! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/158843-new-home-made-hackintosh/#findComment-1113937 Share on other sites
hackintastic
Really thanks for the answers, I really appreciate it! Yes, my main goal was to overclock the CPU to about 3 Ghz. I was only planning to use mac os x for some photoshop etc, this don't ask to much from your cpu i think, i run photoshop now smoothly with 1,8 ghz singel core on vista ultimate... For Power supply i thought that Sharkoon SHA550-12A was a good choice, its 500 watt. Ive choosen for the Ram because it only costs 4 euro more than the 800mhz. The same for the harddrive 5 euro more than a 300gb version. The DVD drive is just 18 euro, the cheapest one they have in my shop. zim2dive
Not sure why you'd say the E5200 is outdated.. it seems to be the favorite amongst folks wanting to OC.. you can pay for an E5200 and OC to E8400 rates for half the price. Personally I have the E8400 but I'm recommending the E5200 to a friend building a budget system. noNix
Which distro do you guys think will work best? Use a retail disk and boot 132 that way you can easily update the system as needed without worring that it will break at any moment. Zaap
@noNixSorry but I heard some freaky story's about that method... Just curious, what 'freaky stories'? Retail installs (the most 'vanilla' method possible) work PERFECTLY on that setup, and in fact, it is the best way to set it up like noNix said, if you want to be able to do reliable software updates. All the 'distro' methods are the 'old school' way to do things in comparison, but it's a good way to get started.
