The local Microcenter has the Dell i7 on sale for $999. This Dell comes with an ATI Radeon HD 4850. I don't know the motherboard in this computer. I've read the ATI 4850 is a pain to get working properly; until 10.5.7 or Snow Leopard comes out this will probably be the case, I assume.

Still, this is a very tempting price to get an i7 rig. Buying my own components would cost more.

Has anyone had success with this Dell to install any of the OSX86 distros? Is the ATI card not worth the hastle? What is the motherboard in this? Thanks for any helpful input!

Yeah, I got the email the other day, and I am also very curious to hear about how easy or difficult it'll be to get Leopard on it. I mean, it's an i7 with 6GB RAM for $999. Even if things don't work right, I might still pick one up.

Edit: I haven't really researched it much yet, so I guess I could get on that. As for the ATI card, one would think it has gotten/will get better since Mac Pros can be ordered with the 4850 now.

I called Dell and the salesman told me it has the Intel X58 motherboard and a 360W(!) power supply. These are substandard components. I think I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and get a Gigabyte or Asus Board and Corsair 750W power supply. I priced a comparable system at ibuypower.com for $960 (Asus P6T board, Nvidia 9500 GT). Plus, Dell apparently has crappy tech support these days. I think you're right regarding the ATI support going forward. The new iMac has a 4850 as an option, so we'll see the driver for that in 10.5.7
