I have managed to corrupt unicode support for the basic fonts such as

Lucida Grande

Monaco

Helvetica etc

I can read unicode characters ie Greek etc but they don't look nice, it looks like Safari (or any other browser) is using some other font that can display unicode characters. This occurs only in web pages and not in OS X itself. What could be fubared?

If I change the appearance options in Safari nothing happens I am stuck with the ugly font display for the unicode (greek) pages.

Anyone has any ideas?

If you're having problems on your system with text appearing "garbled" as in the image below, it could be caused by corrupt font cache files. What appears to be happening is that incorrect or corrupted encoding vector information is being used when mapping the character codes as input by your keyboard to the glyphs they represent in the problematic font. You can use Font Finagler's Font Cache Cleaner feature to purge these cache files in an attempt to restore normal behavior, and to help rule out a font cache corruption as the sole cause of the problem. If, however, you use Font Cache Cleaner but the problem remains, then it could be caused by a font conflict, by a corrupt or less-than-ideal-quality font, or by an underlying OS X font-handling bug. Try removing fonts to isolate the problematic fonts that are causing this behavior.

After going through a lot of reading for OS X fonts I still can't find a solution.

I have installed several applications and fonts that made Safari render pages in a weird way. By weird I mean that if a web site contains both Greek and English words the Greek ones are rendered by the Lucida Grande font and the English ones by the Verdana font. If I disable the Verdana font then Greek is displayed by Lucida Grande and English by Genova. There is no way to have one consistent font for a multi language web site anymore.

I uninstalled all extra fonts and I reinstalled just the system and library fonts as they should be when you install OS X for the first time.

Then I used Font Finagler to rebuild my cache. Nothing no luck. I read the extensive tutorial found here in Apple discussions but still no luck.

I only have the default fonts installed, caches rebuilt the whole lot!

Please o please help me with this I really don't want to reinstall OS X.

PS: All applications work fine, this is my only issue. Another thing that might be of help is that Firefox and Camino can not render Greek pages properly at all. Even if I set the browsers to override the web site's fonts I have no luck. If I set the web site to pick its fonts I get all accented letters substituted by question marks... I am using OS X 10.4.6 with all the updates.

Thank you in advance

This is how a web site looks : notice the different fonts for each language:
