Welcome to the Leopard 10.5.6 installation on the Dell Inspiron 1520 with dual boot:

First of all I wanted to says thanks' to all the great people that has put the effort to bring OS X to the masses and also to keep this project alive and kicking.

Let me give you some specs of my system: chipset Intel 965 GM or 965 PM, video x3100 or 945GM, sound Sigmatel 9205, Dell Wireless (Broadcom wireless), bluetooth.

This is what we'll need to install Leopard:

  • • Inspiron 1520
    • Leo 10.5.6 rev disc 1
    • Any desktop computer with SATA connections (to install 1520's HDD)
    • Slashack (to have resolution change and QE/QI enabled)
    • 10.5.5_seatbelt (if you have issues mounting .dmg images)
    • DVD player fix (to make the application work)
    • Easy BCD 2.0 beta (if dual booting)

Ok, we have everything ready, let's start our guide:

1. Remove SATA HDD of the 1520, just flip over the computer and locate the 4 screws right next to the cylinder symbol, then just slide the HDD out.

2. Before installing the 1520's HDD on the desktop, shut down the desktop, open it, and remove the power cable/s of the HDD's that you might have, we don't want to run in any trouble.

3. Install the 1520's HDD on the desktop.

4. Boot from Leo's DVD (in some cases might not work the first time, keep trying until you can boot from it).

5. Once your on the language screen, select you language and go for next (if you can't use the keyboard or mouse, disable USB emulation on your desktop's BIOS and/or try a set of PS2 keyboard and mouse).

6. You'll have the brief license agreement, go for next and accept it

7. If you don't have any OS X partition on the 1520's HDD won't show up anything or if you do, will show the space available and used, if that is the case, I'll asume that you want to erase the partitions.

8. Click on tools on top and then go for disk utility

9. On the left side will show you the HDD that you wanted to use to install Leopard to it

10. You can select the individual partion or the whole HDD to install Leopard, either option that you chose, click on the right side where it says, erase, then select thevolume format as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and a name for your partition, then go for Erase on the bottom, will give you a warning if you wanted to proceed, erase it.

11. Close the disk utility.

12. On the screen that we were before, now we should have the HDD were to install Leopard, click on it and then go for next.

13. Watch it, don't go for next yet, click on personalize.

14. We need to be careful on this part, select just these items:

• Essential software

• PC EFI 9.0 and DSDT patcher

• Essential system kext

• 10.5.5 kexts

• Voodoo 9.5.0.1

• ICHx chipset support

• GMA x3100 ID 2a12

• Natit GMA

• Sigmatel 9205

• Broadcom wireless

• All the tools except sound flower

15. Click on ok, that wil take you to the previous menu, now go for it!, let's install it

16. The Installation will start to check the DVD for errors, you can skip that part and now go to grab a cup of coffee, since this process will take a while, specially when it says that just one more minute left, don't get fooled, can take up to 10 minutes there.

17. When it finishes will give you a black screen, you can shut down your PC now, or will restart the PC, you can shut it down as well.

18. Remove the 1520's HDD from your desktop PC and install it back again to the 1520's chassis.

19. Cross your fingers and boot up your computer, if everything went fine, you'll be able to boot from it, so go ahead and just follow the configuration wizard, please set a password.

20. Once your on your desktop, go to system preferentes, then go for expose and spaces, click on expose again, will give you an option to configure the 4 hot corners of the screen, select any corner that you wanted to, and then select sleep display, then you can close the window.

21. We'll use the slashack file, so double click it to uncompress it, if you selected all the tools options on the installation, let's look for kext helper, click on finder, then applications, then utilities, then kext helper.

22. Drag and drop these files from the uncompressed slashack folder, appleintelgmax3100, appleintelgmax3100fb and natit, to your kexthelper, then put your password, and then go for easy install

23. Restart your computer

24. OS X will load again, but after a while you'll get a black window, don't worry, that was the purpose of the expose trick, just slide your finger to the corner on the touchpad that you set as the hot corner, and voila! the screen will turn on, with resolution change, QE/QI enabled too!

25. If you have problems with finder crashing when mounting .dmg images, (if not, skip this step) we'll use the 10.5.5_seatbelt, just double click and will guide you trough the installation, restart the computer, and after the Dell logo, tap the F8, you'll get the promt, start with the –f command.

26. Install the DVD player fix

27. Enjoy your Mac! :)

I'll add the dual boot steps later on, since I'm finishing up some testing with it. Please feel free to add any comments or suggestions to the guide or send me an email if you have any trouble, and I certanly hope that I help you out with something new today.

Note: for whatever reason I can't boot from Leo's DVD with my computer, but if you can do it, please just skip the steps that use the desktop computer to install Leo

  • 1 month later...

I've got the same 1520 as you, even the X3100 gfx and i didn't need half the stuff selecting. You don't need to select any x3100 gfx kext, as the original apple ones gave me QE/CI and display sleep. Just needed to select BCM440x network and 9205 audio for a complete system. I do have a dell 1390 wireless though and that is picked up as an Airport card! Plus you don't need to take the hdd out. Simply add the -X flag at installation boot and it'll load fine.
