iMacME
hi everyone, this is my first post! looking to build a PC to dual boot Windows and OSX. have my eye on an Asus P5GL-MX with the 915GL chipset. was wondering if i could match that with a Pentium D 805 dual core 2.66ghz cpu? or do i have to get a higher model mobo with a newer chipset (945? or higher?). couldn't find any info on the Asus site regarding Intel D support. looking to buy the hardware by tomorrow so any help would be appreciated. also i have a OSX X86 bootable install (not sure from who) and it boots on my current P4 2.3ghz socket 478 SSE2 computer (Asus P4V8X-MX with VIA P4M800). it boots the DVD disc and i can get up to the select destination option. however there is no destination option available and i can't get any further. is this because i didn't allocate a proper HFS+ drive/partition? or do i need to patch the install for some hardware incompatibility? i have a G4 mac mini, as well as a working ext fw/usb enclosure so if i can use that to make the prep work for the install easier, any pointers would be appreciated. Macoso
Maybe you need to run Disk Utility, from DVD install! It's an option that you found in menu bar, during instalation. Make from there a mac partition, then continue with installation. iMacME
well i don't have an HFS+ partition on the drive yet. i just wanted to check out if the install disc i got worked. so probably that's my problem. i'll run the disk utility in the install menu and see what it does. well i did some research and it looks like i'll be needing a 945 mobo to run any Pentium D processor, even the entry level 805. so either i upgrade the mobo with more , or i get the mobo i eyed and downgrade to a Celeron D. joeymomoko
I am planning to buy a PD805/820 as well. But as I wanna keep using my poor old AGP card and DDR ram, there's only one choice for me...the asrock 775i65PE, which is using intel 865PE chipset. This board can run dual core smoothly in windows environment (from both asrock official pecification and some hardware review sites), although it's using 865. I wonder anybody here has tried this board on OSx86. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/15284-building-osx-pc/#findComment-98210 Share on other sites
Ritchie
I don't think that 915GL chipset supports Pentium D.. Supports up to 6xx series (Prescotts) You need 945 and above chipset for D.. iMacME
so i opted to pay a little more and pick up an Asus P5LD2-VM with the 945G chipset and GMA950 so that i can use a PentiumD 805. in the meantime, i installed the Myzar 10.4.4-5 patched on my old PC, but it craps out trying to boot! guess i'll have to wait till my new components are delivered and i assemble a new machine.
