conseanery
Okay, I have a problem! I've been crunching at this for 14+ hours now, and I just can't seem to track it down. Hopefully, someone here can help me out. I recently upgraded my Hacintosh to 10.5.6, and somehow it broke the license of my Subversion client "Versions" (www.versionsapp.com). I can't explain it, as I'm totally perplexed. Versions ran with absolutely no glitches on 10.5.5 via iAtkos 5i, but after multiple attempts to upgrade to 10.5.6 (mainly for the benefit of being able to use iWork and iLife 09), it will not detect that I have a valid license. I also own a 2.4 GHz MacBook, which I also have Versions installed on. It's currently running 10.5.6, and Versions works perfectly, so this is clearly an OSx86 issue. Furthermore, I can boot from my 10.5.5 partition (on my Hacintosh), and again Versions runs perfectly, so there is definitely no conflict with the same key being used on multiple computers (they're both mine, and the license agreement is termed as "personal", so this setup is legit, FYI). Thus far, I've attempted upgrading to 10.5.6 from iAtkos 5i via Software Update, and also have attempted a fresh install of iPC OSx86 10.5.6. Both work flawlessly, sans the obvious exception of the Versions license. What happens: 1. I open Versions 2. It says my trial has expired 3. I re-enter my VALID, PURCHASED "license code" 4. The following message appears in the console *** -[NSCFString appendString:]: nil argument 5. Versions endlessly displays the cyclical progress icon until I quit. Attempts to fool Versions into thinking the trial period has not expired have all failed, and personally, I don't want to be forced into doing that in the first place when I paid for the damn program. Does anyone here have any ideas what might be causing this *** -[NSCFString appendString:]: nil argument error message? My guess is that if I can resolve that error, Versions will work again. Oh, and although I do appreciate any and all help, please do not clutter this thread with suggestions to use SmartSVN or the cli svn tools. I went through the headache of getting a working Hacintosh because I enjoy working within a beautiful GUI; I enjoy the simplicity of Versions, and since I've already paid for it, I would much rather simply track down this bug and fix it. westwaerts
with upgrading you lost the file, where your app has written his license. so reinstallit. should help. some apps crash with no QE/CI enabled. conseanery
with upgrading you lost the file, where your app has written his license.so reinstallit. should help. some apps crash with no QE/CI enabled. Thanks westwaerts; unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be that straightforward. Neither cleanly reinstalling Versions nor cleanly reinstalling the entire OS directly to 10.5.6 via iPC fixed the licensing issue. Only the later method was able to reinstate the demo period. It does not appear that the license file (located at ~/Library/Application Support/Versions/License) was in any way affected by upgrading iAtkos 5i. Despite that, I have tried copying the license file from my 10.5.5 backup, but that doesn't seem to have an effect. Both QE\CI are reading as functioning properly on my system. Also, the issue is purely with activation of the license. With the clean iPC install, I was able to use Versions during the 22-something day demo period. The issue seems to only be with (a) reading / validating the license file, and ( validating the license code. My guess is that there is an issue with a hacked 10.5.6 kext that is preventing Versions from properly validating either the license file or license code. ...wish I could just get the Versions peeps to help. Anyone know any of them personally? conseanery
..bump.. doesn't anyone know anything about kexts which changed only between 10.5.5 > 10.5.6, that could have anything to do with generating the following console error? *** -[NSCFString appendString:]: nil argument Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/151932-upgrade-to-1056-broke-an-apps-versions-license/#findComment-1077653 Share on other sites

conseanery
Turns out it was a rare bug in Versions, now resolved with an alpha of the next point release of their software.
