Just successfully (sort of) updated to 10.5.6 from 10.5.5. I am using an installed version of iDeneb v1.3 as my base with the Vanilla kernel. Before updating to 10.5.6, followed the instructions here to prepare my system for update. After update, everything is working (sound, video, network, etc.). Restart works with no problems, but on shutdown I get a kernel panic telling me I need to restart my system or shut down by holding the power button. I followed the instructions found in this thread to try and fix the problem, but no luck. I have ruled out the problem being more than one cpu core running at shutdown.

My current kernel is Vanilla 9.6.0. My main system specs are as follows:

Intel DG31PR

Core2Due E7300 @ 2.66GHz

Corsair DDR2 800MHz 4GB (2x2GB) of RAM

nVidia GeForce 8400GS

SATA HDD and DVD-RW

USB Keyboard and Mouse

So all my programs and hardware is working fine (or appears to be), it's just the problem at shutdown. I've searched around the forums looking for a solution, but wasn't able to find one. Anything I found was either old (OS X 10.5.2 or lower) which I still tried anyways, or wasn't related specifically to what was happening to me. I also tried a Force Shutdown using OSX86Tools and a shutdown from the terminal but same problem.

Thanks.

Boot with the -v option, when you shutdown it must tell you what is the cause of the kernel panic, also you need to give more information about your system, what kind of installation you have, eg. EFI, MBR, Munky system, etc.

Thanks for the reply. My installation was on a GUID partition. Not sure whether or not it's EFI, I just used the iDeneb 1.3 install disc. I installed some EFI thing when I was preparing my update to 10.5.6.

I booted with the -v option and noticed it said my AppleHDA.kext wasn't installed properly. So I reinstalled the kext which appeared to install OK becasue when I rebooted and used -v again, I didn't get any message about my AppleHDA. However, I still cannot shut down properly. When I go to shutdown after booting with -v I get this:

com.apple.SystemConfiguration.Apple80211 complete

com.apple.SystemConfiguration.IPConfiguration complete

com.apple.SystemConfiguration.PreferencesMonitor complete

com.apple.SystemConfiguration.NetworkIdentification complete

com.apple.SystemConfiguration.PPPController complete

com.apple.SystemConfiguration.ATconfig complete

server shutdown complete

it then sits at this for about 15-20 seconds or so then says..

syncing disks...Killing all processes kextcache[15]: didn't act on SIGTERM

continuing

unmount of /home failed (45)

unmount of /net failed (45)

done

CPU halted

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x003ECE52): "A driver releasing a(n) AppleHDAController has corrupted the registry\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.9.59/libkern/c++/OSObject.cpp:241

Debugger called: <panic>

It then does a Backtrace with a bunch of hexadecimal numbers and then says:

BSD Process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task

Mac OS Version:

9G55

Kernel version:

Darwin Kernel Version 9.6.0: Mon Nov 24 17:37:00 PST 2008; root:xnu-1228.9.59~1/RELEASE_I386

System model name (DG31PR)

This is the point where it stops. Let me know if you need any more information (like all the numbers listed during the backtrace). Also, as stated in my original post, my sound works but that is only out of my M-Audio sound card. The onboard audio does not work and is not listed under sound in System Preferences. Not sure if this is related but thought it might be worth a mention.

Thanks again for your help.

I'm also having the same problem after updating to 10.5.6 with vanilla 10.5 install using Chameleon boot disk and using system update to 10.5.4 then 10.5.5 then 10.5.6. I've tried using ls8's AppleHDA.kext 1.6.2a37, but same problem. I've read about pcwiz's Gigabytep35CC.app shutdownfix but wasn't sure if it applied since it was reference to versions prior to 10.5.6, which I didn't have the shutdown problem then, only after updating to 10.5.6.

Yup same problem here. Hopefully someone can help us 'coz I've tried almost everything (OpenHaltRestart.kext, poweroff fix, even the IOPCIFamily.kext that was mentioned in a different topic). But still not loosing hope. :)

Cheers to the OSX86 community!

Ok. i kinda fix the problem but i think it is not recommendable.

1. installed openhaltrestart.kext

2. installed poweroff_fix (chud framework should be installed also)

3. added cpus=1 in com.apple.Boot.plist

4. when system boots up with all these, you can see your core is only 1 instead of 2 (i dont think that is a good idea, you might exhaust the first core).

5. then in terminal.app type poweroff_fix then shutdown.

worked for me but i think this is not a good solution. i removed the cpus=1 from the boot.plist to take advantage of the core 2 duo :D

im having the same kernel panic when i try to shutdown ...the rest is working good at 100%...

Motherboard: Asus M2N-E

Processor: Amd 4200+ DUO CORE

Graphics: Asus EAH 3650 ddr3 256mb -> working at 100% with CI/QE enabled

Chipset: Nforce MCP570

Lan: Nforce MCP570 built-in gigabit MAC with external Marvell PHY -> working at 100% but i think its because of this that the kernel panic hangs when i try to shutdown

Memory: 2x1gb OCZ 800mhz ATI powered

OSX version: IDENEB 10.5.6

Kernel Version: Darwin Kernel 9.5.0 - Voodoo Release 1.0

im having exactly the same problem, not sure if I want to try the CPU=1 though, I shouldn't have to do this as it worked perfectly before update, but by the looks of things it is people with multiple core's who are suffering from the same problem.

I installed iDeneb 1.4 on the following specs

Intel DG35EC Motherboard

Intel Q6600 Processor

nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512 Card

Running Vanilla kernel, voodoo has exactly the same problem

Ok found the answer for this as well. i've tried the DSDT patcher from PCWiz.

1. checked the New HPET

2. And apply the DSDT patch to my Mac HD.

3. Clicked run, then reboot.

4. boot with -v so i can see if DSDT was loaded. ;)

Problem solved after that.

hope this helps other people as well.
