I'm using the pre-patched bootable DVD install to setup OSx on my old Dell pentium 4 system. After the marchine boots off the DVD, the "Loading Darwin" message appears, and immediately thereafter the standard OSX grey screen with Apple logo and spinning progress clock appears...and that's where everything seems to end. After more than a half hour the machine is still stuck in this position. Oddly enough the DVD drive still behaves as though it's being accessed, and the hard drive light is on. Should I leave it alone or is it really frozen?

Well it's been at least an hour now and still at the same screen so I assume this is stuck.

My hardware is a circa 2001 Dell Dimension 8100 desktop, featuring a 1.7GHZ P4 (early P4 Williamette), 768MB RAM, 60GB HD, ATI 9700, Liteon DVD burner.

The sad part is, I was originally in the process of successfully installing OSX via the VMware method. But, idiot that I am, I chose to let the process continue while I left to do some outdoor chores. I think the system rebooted, and since the OSX installer DVD was still in the drive, it booted off that and subsequently corrupted my HD. That's my theory anyway because I boot the system normally I get an error message that says b0.

i got the "MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD(INTEL_AMD_SSE3_SSE2).iso" and ive been trying to get it running on my dell inspiron 8500, the entire installation process went by without any problems, but as soon as it rebooted i assume to go into osx. it just kind of hangs there. then after like 5 mins a little crossed out circle appears in the middle of the screen, i let it sit there for about an hour or so and nothing had changed, but i had the same deal, it seemed like it was accessing the drives and all.

That's the same ISO I'm using. The installer never seems to work for me at all. Except through the VMware method. Next time I'll know better than to leave it running on its own.

For now I have to go through the painful task of reinstalling XP, then trying VMware AGAIN.

That's the same iso that I'm using. It didn't work installing it from a DVD, but it worked fine through VMWare. BTW, OSx86 fried my MoBo. :)

Well I read somewhere else in these forums that burning another DVD might help, and apparently it has. For the first time the installation went through without a hitch. The entire install suquence went according, right down to the last item in the right-hand list "Finishing Up". When it prompted me to restart I removed the DVD. Upon restart however, I now get the same grey screen with Apple logo and spinning progress bar. But this time I a white square box with a crossed circle above the Apple logo, which I assume to indicate that something isn't mounting, or something to that effect. Any ideas what that is?
