I have a Dell XPS 400 working pretty well, out of the box.

 

My specs:

CPU - Intel Pentium 4 540, 3200 MHz (16 x 200) - Prescott

Motherboard - Dell Dell DXP051

North Bridge Intel Lakeport i945P

Video - Chip Type RADEON X300 SE (0x5B60)

Audio - SigmaTel STAC9220 A1 @ Intel 82801GB ICH7 - High Definition Audio Controller [A-1] PCI

 

This my out of the box issues:

resolution at 1024x768 (can't change, yet)

no sound

 

DVD Used:

MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD(INTEL-AMD-SSE3-SSE2).iso

by the way, does your XPS have a soundmax integrated card? if it does, make sure the device/manufacturer ids are the same. The soundmax kext is located in AppleAC97Audio.kext/Plugins. after your ids match, reboot the system and try plugging the sound into the black (microphone slot), that should get it working.

 

about the ati graphics, you can either wait till omni releases his driver with a working frame buffer (he's almost done) or if you have vesa 3.0 compatibility mode (check at the darwin bootloader), you can edit com.apple.Boot.plist located in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and add the lines:

 

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1280x1024x32</string>

 

(after <dict> and also, dont forget to make an indentation)
